About the Item

This iconic lounge chair and ottoman by Warren Platner for Knoll International represents the peak of sculptural American modernism. Designed in the mid-1960s and still celebrated as a hallmark of 20th-century design, this particular set dates to April 25, 1972, as confirmed by the original Knoll production label beneath the seat cushion. A one-owner piece until now, it remains remarkably well-preserved—retaining all original components, including labeled cushions on both the chair and ottoman. The chair’s signature steel wire frame—formed from hundreds of precisely welded rods—creates. Finished in a darkened bronze tone, the frame is at once structural and ornamental, fluid yet monumental. It reflects Platner’s singular ability to merge modernist restraint with decorative flourish. The ottoman mirrors the same radial geometry and rests as a seamless, low-slung extension of the chair. Upholstered in its original vivid orange textile, the cushions offer a bold chromatic counterpoint to the metallic base. The fabric remains richly saturated, with only the slightest trace of sun fading on the chair’s back perimeter—barely visible and only under certain lighting. A few very minor imperfections appear in the upholstery upon close inspection. The raised ridge of foam at the back cushion edge has slightly firmed with age but retains its sculptural profile. The metal bases are exceptionally clean—free of rust, with an even, glowing patina across both pieces. Both the chair and ottoman bear their original Knoll International labels—an essential detail for collectors and authentication. The complete set offers an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a verified, early 1970s example in a dazzling and original upholstery, with provenance, integrity, and visual impact intact. For collectors of American design, fans of Platner’s sculptural vocabulary, or interiors seeking a centerpiece with presence and pedigree, this lounge chair and ottoman deliver the perfect intersection of comfort and legacy. A true investment in design history. Tulip Group Lounge Chairs in Rosewood by K M Wilkins for G-Plan of England
By Thonet, Percival Lafer, Charles and Ray Eames, G Plan Furniture
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Matching sofa also available and sold separately (see last pic). This incredible set was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept them in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often misattributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. Both chairs hover on their original Magnum Orbit chrome...
