Brazilian Jangada Rosewood & Leather Sling Chair with Ottoman by Jean Gillon

About the Item

Anchored in the bold horizons of 1960s Brazilian modernism, the Jangada lounge chair and ottoman by Jean Gillon stands as a testament to artful craftsmanship, organic structure, and expressive comfort. Named after the rustic fishing rafts of Brazil’s northern coast, the design conjures a vessel-like cradle—inviting the sitter to recline within a netted embrace of nylon rope and button-tufted leather. This particular example has undergone a meticulous, full restoration. The rosewood frame was completely disassembled: each component stripped, sanded, and hand-buffed with multiple coats of finishing oil to reveal the rich tonal depth and flowing grain. Every dowel was individually treated before being reassembled with precision, restoring the frame to its original integrity. The sling’s signature fishing-net-style rope was gently cleaned, preserving its sculptural tension and original character. The cushions were recovered in a marbled caramel-toned leather, slightly under-filled to maintain the design’s minimalist softness while maximizing comfort. Deep button tufting adds a layer of tailored elegance without obscuring the raw beauty of the exposed frame. Jean Gillon, a Romanian-born designer who found his creative voice in Brazil, brought a sculptor’s sensitivity to functional furniture. His works reflect a rare blend of architectural thinking and artisan-level material knowledge—embodied in the Jangada’s bold silhouette and use of native Brazilian rosewood. His reverence for structure and sensuality made his pieces icons of the Brazilian modernist era.
