An adaptation of the specially commissioned 'Lobby Chairs' for the Time Life building in New York, the 1960 release of the Lounge Chair version brought this wonderful design to homes, offices, conference rooms and lobbies all over the US and beyond. The design has had numerous names over the years including the Time Life Lounge Chair (from the building it was commissioned to go in), the Lobby Chair (the intended space of the original commission) and even the Eames Executive Chair Group. Any one of these terms can still represent the design today so it is worth remembering them all. Generally speaking however, the Eames Time Life Lobby Chair tends to tick the most boxes in terms of name. The conceptual commissioned pieces installed into the Lobby of the Time Life building were grandiose, wide framed and set into a laid back position. The design had after all, attempted to re-create the comfort of the Eames Lounge Chair, but without the size. The marketed versions of the Eames Time Life Lobby Chair were tweaked ever so slightly and initially released in two Lounge variations. Model 675 closely resembled the conceptual Lobby Chairs and were wide, laid back lounge chairs with a swivel movement. Model 3475 however had adjustability of height and angle and was slightly thinner. Herman Miller also released an upright desk chair version a year later in 1961. The success of the Alu Group can also be seen in the design with the beautiful upholstery against polished Alu frame and sides. What a lot of people don't know however is that the chair actually has a plywood skeleton unseen to the eye. The Lounge versions of the chair were eventually discontinued, we believe into the 1990's. The model numbers for the Eames Time Life Lobby Chair may not be anywhere near as complicated as those of the Alu Group or Soft Pad Lounge Chairs, as they did not change quite as often, but they did go through one or two developments. Model 675 was the first to be released in 1960 with the adjustable version following a year later. Both were re-numbered later into the 1960's. Now, on to this chair, it has the early and Original Herman Miller 1960's stamped base which has never been removed, the leather has been totally restored to include being washed back, hand dyed six times, antiqued, sealed waxed down and polished, this is the only chair in the entire world with this exact colour finish, there are no others and there never will be Condition wise, the chrome is in sublime order throughout, it has the perfect hue that is only achieved through honest age and use, the leather as mentioned is restored, there was one hair line rip on the top back near one of the buttons which has been professionally restored, there is a new leather panel inside the cushion so its impossible for this area to ever fail again, otherwise it just has the exact look and feel you could hope for This chair came from a third generation architects home in Germany, I have been looking for this exact model for over ten years and I have never had the chance to purchase one so this one was a money no object project for me Dimensions: Height:- 74cm Width:- 73cm Depth:- 68cm Seat height:- 44cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. Any questions please feel free to ask before you bid. Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

The Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman are furnishings made of molded plywood and leather, designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company. They are officially titled Eames Lounge ( 670 ) and Ottoman ( 671 ) and were released in 1956 after years of development by designers. It was the first chair that the Eameses designed for a high-end market. Examples of these furnishings are part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Design Charles and Ray Eames sought to develop furniture that could be mass-produced and affordable, with the exception of the Eames Lounge Chair. This luxury item was inspired by the traditional English club chair. The Eames Lounge Chair is an icon of Modern style design, although when it was first made, Ray Eames remarked in a letter to Charles that the chair looked "comfortable and un-designy". Charles's vision was for a chair with "the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." The chair is composed of three curved plywood shells covered with veneer: the headrest, the backrest and the seat. The layers are glued together and shaped under heat and pressure. The shells and the seat cushions are essentially of the same shape, and composed of two curved forms interlocking to form a solid mass. The chair back and headrest are identical in proportion, as are the seat and the ottoman. The products have changed in various ways over time. Beginning in 1956 and running through the very early 1990s, the shells were made up of five thin layers of plywood which were covered by a veneer of Brazilian rosewood. The use of Brazilian rosewood was discontinued in the early 1990s, and current production since then consists of seven layers of plywood covered by finishing veneers of cherry, walnut, palisander rosewood (a sustainably grown wood with similar grain patterns to the original Brazilian versions), and other finishes. Small changes include the sets of spacers between the aluminum spines and the wood panels, originally of rubber, later hard plastic washers, and the number of screws securing the armrests, originally three, changed to two in second-series models, while the "domes of silence" (glides/feet) on the chair base originally had thinner screws attaching them to the aluminum base than those on later chairs, and the zipper around the cushions, either brown or black on early models, was later black only. Further, early ottomans had removable rubber slide-on feet with metal glides, and early labels are of oblong foil. History The Eames Lounge Chair first...
