Baron Rais d'Eisenberg, Hand-Colored Equestrian Engraving c. 1747, "Le Brillant"
Located in Morristown, NJ
18th century German, a hand-colored engraving of a dressage horse and rider from Description du Manège Moderne by Friedrich Wilhelm, Baron Rais d' Eisenberg (German, ca. 1700-ca. 1770). Engraved by Bernard Picart (French, 1673-1733). Titled "Le Brillant", this dressage engraving is plate XXXIII. There is a gallery label verso. The print is matted and framed under UF-3 plexiglass, which offers the maximum amount of UV protection (approx. 97%). This print was originally part of an illustrated book Baron d'Eisenberg made describing the art of the cavaliers and depicting the different breeds of horses- The full title of the book is L'Art de Monter a Cheval: ou Description du Manége Moderne, Dans sa Perfection, published in Leipzig: Arkstée et Merkus, 1747). A set of 7 framed engravings from the same book sold at Sotheby's for $9,500 (plus tax and buyers premium). Reference: The author, a German horseman and artist, spent some of his youth at the manège of Saxe-Weimar before entering into the service of the Emperor. He then spent six years in Naples as the Master of Horse of the Viceroy before returning to Vienna where he studied under M. de Regenthal, the imperial Master of Horse. He participated in the coronation of the Emperor Charles V at Frankfurt in 1711, then spent some time in England, but was back in Germany before 1753. He probably died in Tuscany where he was Director and Master of the Horse at the Academy in Pisa. Brunet II, 957; Mennessier de la Lance I, p. 438. The Baron wrote several important and lavishly illustrated books on horses: his Description du manège moderne dans sa perfection, London 1727, and Dictionnaire des termes du manège moderne, 1747, being the best well-known. He dedicated Description du Manège Moderne to King George II and to his son, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Subscribers to the book included royalty and nobility from all over Europe. The engraver was Bernard Picart, born in Paris in 1673. He gained honors at the Academy of Paris at the age of sixteen. He was a master designer and engraver and worked in Paris and Amsterdam until his death in 1733. Dimensions: 9"h x 12"w (sight), 16.5"h x 19.25"w (frame) Condition: Good, some rippling to sheet, not examined out of frame. Provenance: Lombard Antiquarian Maps & Prints, Cape Elizabeth...

Optica Print of Joseph Sold to Potiphar in Egypt, circa 1770 – Biblical Scene
Located in Langweer, NL
Optica Print of Joseph Sold to Potiphar in Egypt, circa 1770 – Architectural Vue d’Optique by Georg Balthasar Probst This highly detailed hand-colored *vue d’optique*, titled "Madianitae vendebant Iosephum Putiphari in Aegypto Pharaonis Camerario" (The Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, officer of Pharaoh), is a compelling visual retelling of a biblical episode from the Book of Genesis. Produced around 1770 in Augsburg by the noted printer Georg Balthasar Probst, this print illustrates Joseph’s arrival in Egypt and his sale to Potiphar by the Midianite traders, who had acquired him from his brothers. This scene continues the dramatic biblical narrative of Joseph and is part of a series of *vues d’optique*—optical perspective prints intended for viewing through a zograscope, a lens device popular in 18th-century Europe. These prints were made with reversed titles at the top to accommodate mirrored viewing, giving a striking sense of depth and realism to the architecture and figures. Georg Balthasar Probst (1732–1801), active in Augsburg, was one of the most prolific publishers of such perspective prints, known for combining biblical storytelling with vivid architectural fantasy. In this composition, the setting is an imagined classical Egyptian city rendered in a European neoclassical style, featuring grand palaces, arcades, columned porticoes, and tiled courtyards. At the lower right, the Midianite merchants bargain with Potiphar, who inspects Joseph with curiosity. The background is filled with bustling market activity, town buildings, and richly dressed figures, offering depth and narrative complexity. The presence of multiple architectural elements—balconies, domes, and checkerboard flooring...

Important Rare Set of Nine Appliqué Silk Panels by Marianna Elmo
Located in London, by appointment only
Important and rare set of nine exquisite New Testament silk thread appliqué panels known as Broderies à fils collés. Each panel depicts a distinct biblical scene, rendered with remarkable precision and delicacy. Signed Marianna Elmo, Italy, Lecce, circa 1750. Italy Circa 1750, 1755 Frame H: 95 cms (37.5 ins) Frame W: 75 cms (30 ins) Panel Height : 26 cms (10.2 ins) Panel Width: 20 cms (7.9 ins) Centre Height: 24 cms (9.5 ins) Centre Width: 18 cms (7 ins) Divine Threads: A Set of Nine New Testament Appliqué Panels by Marianna Elmo Scenes from the New Testament The scenes include the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Holy Family (x2), The Holy Father and Jesus, Jesus taken to the temple, the raising of Lazarus from the dead, and the Resurrection. Each is rendered with remarkable precision and delicacy. Marianna Elmo Daughter of painter Serafino Elmo, an important artist in Lecce during the 18th century, Marianna was an embroiderer who used the technique of broderie à fils collés (glued thread embroidery). She created images and landscapes by gluing polychrome silk threads onto a cardboard support, covered with a layer of virgin wax. The faces and limbs of the figures are crafted from cut silk or satin shapes, further painted with tempera or watercolor to achieve lifelike detail. The panels contain many figures embroidered and painted with remarkable skill. Marianna translated the paintings of her father and of famous painters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries into colored threads and is considered the leader of the school of Lecce embroiderers. Her fame reached Naples. Leonardo Quesi, Amato Quesi, Gaetano and Angelo Pati, and Irene Elmo, Marianna’s sister, belonged to this school. Marianna’s work is recognized for its technical brilliance and artistic sensitivity. Two dated works by her hand are known in museum collections: *The Flight into Egypt* (1752, Museum of San Martino, Naples) and a casket reliquary of St. Mary of Banzi (1754, Banzi, Province of Potenza). Additionally, the Pinacoteca Provinciale di Bari holds two signed pieces by the artist. The panels were often used in religious settings or as embellishments for sacred objects. The compositions are inspired by prints, a common practice among embroiderers of the period, and feature key moments from the New Testament, including scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Medium The images are created using the technique known as broderie à fils collés, where thin polychrome silk threads and metal threads are meticulously applied side by side onto a virgin beeswax-coated cardboard base. The faces and limbs of the figures are crafted from cut satin shapes, further painted with tempera or watercolor to achieve lifelike detail. The panels contain many figures embroidered and painted with remarkable skill. Dimensions – 8 panels: 26 x 20 cm each – Centre panel: 24 x 18 cm Provenance Acquired from Sotheby’s, London, in the 1960s by the owner’s father; reframed in Paris by Christian de Beaumont...
