A large and striking aboriginal painting by celebrated Australian artist Yannima Tommy Watson (1935s-2017; Pitjantjatjara people from Australia's central western desert). Stretched and ready to display (no frame). Medium: Acrylic on canvas Year of Creation: 2013 Title: Wati Kutjara An important aboriginal dreamtime story from the Western Australia (the song line is also known as Two Men Dreaming), the narrative is about two young lizard-men travelling all over the Western Desert. They covered a vast landscape from Kimberley in the north to Southern Australia. The two brothers often took the form of wind and left songs in their epic journey to enlighten the people they encountered with rituals and knowledge. As magical ancestral beings, they destroyed evil spirits and created sacred objects across all over the Western Dessert. Provenance: Agathon Galleries, Melbourne 2013 Art Yarramunua, Melbourne (accompanied by a certificate of authenticity) Private Collection, Melbourne 2017 About the artist (courtesy of Kate Owen and Japingka Gallery) Yannima Tommy Watson was a celebrated Pitjantjatara artist, born around 1935 in the desert west of Irrunytju in Western Australia. Tommy was a Law man of Karima skin group, and his traditional names were Yannima and Pikarli relate to specific sites near his birthplace at Anumarapiti, west of Irrunytju. As a young man Tommy learned the bush skills of hunting and gathering, living off the land. In these years his physical and spiritual knowledge of the land was deeply embedded in his life. Tommy Watson first met white people at Ernabella Mission in the 1940s. He then spent decades working as a stockman and laborer on cattle stations. Not until 2001 when he was in his mid 60s, did Tommy Watson pick up a paint brush and painted his first picture at Irrunytju art center established by a small group of artists. Watson's work became quickly recognized for his powerful use of colors and his mesmerizing creation of energetic movement. He exhibited in Alice Springs at Desert Mob and as a finalist at the Telstra NATSIAA Art Awards in Darwin. With his work becoming highly collectable, Tommy soon entered into an exclusive representation agreement with Jon Ioannou of Agathon Gallery. This arrangement marked the start of a second phase of Tommy's career and saw the creation of a large body of outstanding artworks which were to further propel Tommy into the upper echelons of Australian indigenous artists. Measuring 56 H x 67 W, this large Dutch oil on canvas painting from the 1700s depicts a Southern landscape of a glen beneath a rocky cliff. The expansive valley stretches far into the distance, before terminating at a lake in front of a mountain. Numerous flocks of sheep can be seen throughout the basin, including a group high up on the towering cliff with green trees dotting the sand-colored rock. Most of the flocks in the distance are being tended to by shepherds, but interestingly, a group of four men has gathered in the foreground to engage in leisurely activities as their sheep, cows, goat, and dog await nearby. A few chateaus can be seen in the distance, but most of the architecture is in the style of a capriccio, in that they are dilapidated. The top of a stone obelisk is missing and there are some losses to the inscribed pedestal next to it that supports a lidded urn. Large pieces of broken rock are scattered about, with one slab being used as a seat/table for two shepherds playing cards. Several birds fly in the blue sky, with the setting sun giving the clouds hues of gray, orange, and pink. The peaceful scene is surrounded by a brown wood frame with a thin undulating gilt border that edges the canvas. Our large Dutch painting...

A very important early work by Bertil Vallien b. 1938. Unique and monumental wall sculpture, hand painted and contour sawn wood. Made in Sweden 1966. One of a kind! The sculpture is depicting fishes in the water. It was commissioned by an optician in 1966. That is why the eyes are made of oval glass mirrors. They are also hiding the holes where you screw the sculpture to the wall. The sculpture would be great in a fish restaurant or in an indoor pool area. It will certainly make a statement wherever it will hang! A photograph depicting the artist in front of the sculpture is included (see image)! Fully signed and dated 1966 (see image). The sculpture is in 3 parts. The upper part is in one piece. The lower part is in 2 pieces. There are no problems hanging this on the wall. It is heavy but not that heavy. Measurements: The upper part, Lenght 226cm, height 68cm, 7cm deep. The lower part, Lenght 245cm, height 75cm, 7cm deep. As mounted as in the pictures: length 304cm, height 120cm. Total length if one put these pieces after one another, circa 475cm. You can put this sculpture on the wall with different combinations and variations. In 2017 Flint Institute of Arts in Michigan bought the "One million Dollar Boat". They paid one million dollars for the mixed media sculpture "Passage" made by Bertil Vallien. The canvas shows in the center Lot sitting and already drunk, depicted according to traditional iconography, old, gray and with long gray boat. With his left hand he grabs the wine flask that one of his daughters offers him. She is depicted kneeling and resting on large boulders of stone, described as an architectural base, dressed in a voluminous deep blue mantle, her hair covered with a humble headdress made of a knotted cloth; look at the viewer, as if to want to involve him directly in the scene. The other daughter is described on the left, from the back to the observer, with a bare back and dark hair gathered by a red ribbon. She too is intent on serving her father a cup in which to pour the wine. Around them a duck placed on a cloth, some bread and another wine flask enrich the composition describing a banquet in progress. The scene is set outdoors, where only a large tent supported by branches arranged in a hut serves as a shelter to the figures. In the background a forest landscape blends chromatically with the blue sky. To the right in the distance, is described the city of Sodom, already destroyed and on fire. Lot’s wife...
