Large Aboriginal Painting "Wati Kutjara" by Yannima Tommy Watson
Large Aboriginal Painting "Wati Kutjara" by Yannima Tommy Watson

Large Aboriginal Painting "Wati Kutjara" by Yannima Tommy Watson

Located in Atlanta, GA

A large and striking aboriginal painting by celebrated Australian artist Yannima Tommy Watson (1935s-2017; Pitjantjatjara people from Australia's central western desert). Stretched and ready to display (no frame). Medium: Acrylic on canvas Year of Creation: 2013 Title: Wati Kutjara An important aboriginal dreamtime story from the Western Australia (the song line is also known as Two Men Dreaming), the narrative is about two young lizard-men travelling all over the Western Desert. They covered a vast landscape from Kimberley in the north to Southern Australia. The two brothers often took the form of wind and left songs in their epic journey to enlighten the people they encountered with rituals and knowledge. As magical ancestral beings, they destroyed evil spirits and created sacred objects across all over the Western Dessert. Provenance: Agathon Galleries, Melbourne 2013 Art Yarramunua, Melbourne (accompanied by a certificate of authenticity) Private Collection, Melbourne 2017 About the artist (courtesy of Kate Owen and Japingka Gallery) Yannima Tommy Watson was a celebrated Pitjantjatara artist, born around 1935 in the desert west of Irrunytju in Western Australia. Tommy was a Law man of Karima skin group, and his traditional names were Yannima and Pikarli relate to specific sites near his birthplace at Anumarapiti, west of Irrunytju. As a young man Tommy learned the bush skills of hunting and gathering, living off the land. In these years his physical and spiritual knowledge of the land was deeply embedded in his life. Tommy Watson first met white people at Ernabella Mission in the 1940s. He then spent decades working as a stockman and laborer on cattle stations. Not until 2001 when he was in his mid 60s, did Tommy Watson pick up a paint brush and painted his first picture at Irrunytju art center established by a small group of artists. Watson's work became quickly recognized for his powerful use of colors and his mesmerizing creation of energetic movement. He exhibited in Alice Springs at Desert Mob and as a finalist at the Telstra NATSIAA Art Awards in Darwin. With his work becoming highly collectable, Tommy soon entered into an exclusive representation agreement with Jon Ioannou of Agathon Gallery. This arrangement marked the start of a second phase of Tommy's career and saw the creation of a large body of outstanding artworks which were to further propel Tommy into the upper echelons of Australian indigenous artists. This painting was created toward the end of that phase. In 2005, Tommy was commissioned, along with Ningura Napurrula, Lena Nyadbi, Michael Riley, Judy Watson, John Mawurndjul, Paddy Bedford...

A French Nature Morte, 20th Century
A French Nature Morte, 20th Century

A French Nature Morte, 20th Century

By Nicolas Desportes

Located in Dallas, TX

The brilliant colors of this French nature morte are quite impressive, allowing the imagery to be seen crystal clear. Oil enhancements have been applied to this 20th-century transferred image to evoke similarities to the painting that it is after, which is currently housed in Le Louvre Museum in Paris. Our version is incredibly well-done and true to the Alexandre François Desportes original, which is entitled Game, Fruit, Flowers, and a Dog (1712). A variety of felled game (a rabbit and six birds) and a hunting rifle are displayed next to a stone fountain with a mythical creature mascaron water feature. The gadrooned basin is not filled with water, but rather a woven basket of blueberries next to a cluster of fruits including peaches and cherries (there is also a blue and white ceramic bowl full of peaches on a stone to the right of the fountain). Vibrant flowers in a wicker basket sit atop the thickly molded entablature of the cream-colored fountain. A pink rose bush grows on one side of the fountain, opposite from large, verdant bushes that obscure most of the blue sky. Laying beneath the fountain basin is a white hunting dog with black markings on its ears and face. Desportes was born in 1661 in Champigneulle, in northern France, later studying in Paris with the Flemish painter, Bernaerts. Initially, Desportes was a well-respected portrait painter, living in Poland during his mid-thirties to paint aristocrats such as King John III Sobieski. Upon the king’s death, Desportes returned to Paris and switched his focus to painting animals and floral arrangements. Both Louis XIV and Louis XIV commissioned Desportes to paint portraits of their favorite hunting dogs. Desportes would often join the kings on royal hunts, where he would travel with a notebook for still life sketches...

Miniature Mudejar Archway w Inlaid Frame, Inspired by the Alhambra, Spain c.1900

Miniature Mudejar Archway w Inlaid Frame, Inspired by the Alhambra, Spain c.1900

Located in Lisse, NL

This beautifully handcrafted wall piece pays tribute to the splendor of Andalusian architecture, echoing the intricate arches and decorative flourishes of the Alhambra in Granada. Made in early 20th-century Spain, it captures the spirit of Islamic Revival style with striking detail and artisan precision. At its center are three classic horseshoe arches, richly adorned with arabesques and supported by slender columns topped with finely worked capitals. A palette of soft reds, blues, and golds brings depth and warmth, further elevated by a rich burgundy velvet background. Surrounding the scene is a remarkable inlaid wooden frame, featuring delicate geometric patterns and flowing Arabic calligraphy — hallmarks of Neo-Mudejar design. This is not only a decorative object but a conversation piece, a rare combination of cultural history, architectural beauty, and fine craftsmanship. There are signs of restorations and some chipping to the plasterwork, mostly along the edges, but nothing that takes away from the overall beauty or structural integrity of the piece. Whether you're a lover of Islamic art, architectural miniatures, or simply looking for something rich in history and charm to add to your space, this piece brings timeless character and a story with it. A rare find with true soul. The large frame may have some minor losses and but this antique art work...

Vintage kimono textile art " Cranes ~ Kintsugi ~ II" White Red Gold Japan

Certified Kimono Meister work / Certificate of Authenticity included. One-of-a-kind Japanese textile art made from vintage obi fabrics. Sustainable artwork for modern interiors, collectors, boutique hotels, and lovers of Japanese aesthetics. [Size] 73 x 53 x 5 cm [Materials] Silk for the outside layer, wooden frame for the under layer, and gold leaf [Story behind the work] This is the second version of "Cranes: Kintsugi," created from the same kimono using a different section of the textile. Each artwork is handmade, and no two pieces are identical. The frame for this work is made of paulownia wood taken from antique Kiritansu, which are traditional chests of drawers for kimonos. I use antique kiritansu that can no longer be used as furniture to create the basis and frames for my works. It adds an even more authentic atmosphere of the traditional wabi-sabi spirit. Can you feel it? The piece uses the concept of kintsugi. It unites the pieces of antique kimono back together with golden leaf to give it a second wind as an artwork. [Period and Story] The kimono used in this piece was originally crafted during the late Showa period, around the 1960s to 1980s. [Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors] The Japanese saying goes, "A crane lives a thousand years, a tortoise lives ten thousand years," making cranes a symbol of longevity. Cranes are also known for staying with the same partner for their entire lives, which is why they are often used at weddings and other celebrations to symbolize marital bliss and the desire for harmony between husband and wife. On this particular piece, cranes are flying through snow woven on the fabric, as if they are overcoming all disasters to get to their beloved ones. The color scarlet, or deeply dyed red, used for most of the cranes here, has long been associated with the meaning of warding off evil. It is believed to possess the power to repel malevolent forces and invite good fortune. During the Heian period, from 794 to 1185, scarlet was reserved for sacred buildings and ceremonial objects that held great significance. Ordinary people were prohibited from wearing scarlet red kimonos, which made it a highly special color. [Characteristics of the fabric] Cranes, going up and down, are generously decorated by kimpaku here. Kimpaku refers to gold leaf or foil in Japanese. Gold leaf is a traditional material used in various aspects of Japanese culture, including art, crafts, and even in culinary applications. In traditional Japanese art, gold leaf is often applied to religious objects, sculptures, paintings, and lacquerware to create a luxurious and decorative effect. The use of gold leaf in art dates back centuries and is associated with a sense of wealth, prestige, and the divine. Traditional kimpaku technique is used here to make an accent decoration in the middle. [About the frame] This artwork frame is crafted from paulownia wood, a uniquely Japanese material closely tied to the world of kimonos, and it serves to convey the refined beauty of Japanese nature. Paulownia wood is known as the lightest wood in Japan, praised for its natural luster, resistance to moisture, and resilience against cracking. Since ancient times, it has been used in crafting furniture, chests, and musical instruments. Paulownia wood is closely linked to kimono culture. During the Edo period, it became customary to store cherished kimonos in paulownia chests...
