An oil painting on canvas showing a portrait of a classical maiden depicted as a vestal virgin dressed in classical attire, having chestnut hair concealed by a guarnello or thin veil and holding a Roman oil lamp. The painting signed “F. Hofelder" on the lower right of the canvas was executed circa 1873 almost 100 years after the original by the late 18 Century neoclassical Swiss artist Angelika Kauffman. The virtually unknown Polish artist is likely to have copied the original painting hanging at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, Germany. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, 1609-1664, Young Man, Etching Circa 1640
By Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione
Located in Toronto, CA
This is an original etching by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, circa 1640, of a Young Man Looking Down to the Right. It is the only known state and belongs to the series known as 'Studies of Heads in Oriental Headdress'. Signed (in monogram) in the plate in the upper right 'G Castiglione Genovese.' In a delicate gilt/black frame. Frame dimensions 12.75" by 8.75". Certificate of Authenticity. In this work, Castiglione offers us an exquisite portrait of a young man. This small etching shows all the hallmarks of Castiglione's style: incredibly detailed etching marks that result in a wonderful play of light and shadow. The angle of the head and the lively floating feather in the young man's hat show us a figure in movement, pausing to look at something the viewer can only guess at. That such a small collection lines and cross-hatchings can evoke so much is a testament to Castiglione's genius. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman of the Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as Il Grechetto in Italy and in France as Le Benédette. Castiglione was a brilliant draftsman and pioneered the development of the oil sketch (often using a mixture of mediums) as a finished work. He is credited with having invented the monotype in 1648, the only printmaking technique to be an Italian invention, making over twenty over the succeeding years. His most popular and influential prints were a series of exotic heads, mostly of vaguely Oriental males, but also of women. From Bartch/Bellini: Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was profoundly influenced by foreigners. He first studied with local artists in his native Genoa, absorbing not only Tuscan Mannerism and Caravaggism but also the style of Peter Paul Rubens, who had worked in Genoa. From 1621, Castiglione also worked in Anthony van Dyck's Genoa studio. Early on, he was attracted to Flemish animal painting. Though he painted portraits, historical pieces and landscapes, Castiglione excelled in rural scenes with animals and influenced Italy's animal painting specialists. By 1634, Castiglione was in Rome, where he remained for about ten years. After returning to Genoa for a time, he worked for the Mantuan court in 1648, which had also employed Rubens. There Castiglione picked up the freedom of touch he saw in Domenico Fetti's paintings. One of the first Italians to appreciate Rembrandt van...

The Road to Abstraction by Judith Myers
By Judith Myers
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
Acquired from 2011 Solo exhibition at a gallery in Vancouver Canada titled "The Road to Abstraction " by mixed-media artist Judith Myers. This exhibition of works is the inspired result of a recent trip to Holland where she participated in a workshop on a canal boat studying in depth the history of the Dutch Masters and practicing traditional techniques using contemporary materials. Judith Myers was born in Toronto, Canada and trained in Modern dance before embarking on a career in visual art. Her passion for the abstract expressionists gave inspiration to move to Europe in 1980 where the artistic ambiance was prevalent and conducive for a Canadian to study and integrate with the artists of the European community. Arriving in Amsterdam with a background in teaching modern dance was the introduction that paved the way to being welcomed into learning ceramics, drawing, painting and mixed media. It took only a short time before her work was on display in exhibitions in Holland, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. She is presently living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia Exhibition History 2013 Tate Gallery, Port Hope...

Signed Portrait of an Aristocratic Lady by English Victorian Artist Laurence Koe
By Laurence Koe
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A large and beautiful three quarter length portrait of a partly seated lady her hat over one arm holding a bouquet of flowers, the other arm held upward holding a branch of a tree. This original oil on canvas by the British artist Laurence Koe, (1863-1913), is signed on the lower right and dated 1905. Lawrence E. Koe was a portrait painter and sculptor. He is listed as living in Brighton when he first exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1891, but by 1894 he had moved to London where he appears to have settled for the remainder of his life. Koe exhibited widely; over twenty times at The Royal Academy, but also at the R.O.I, The Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Most of his exhibited works were portraits, and among his sitters were the wives of fellow artists Harold Speed RP (1872-1957) and Harold Piffard (fl. 1895-1899). In 1896 Koe exhibited “Venus and Tännhauser” at the Royal Academy, now in the permanent collection in the Brighton Museum and Art and he showed a painting of Sappho two years later. He clearly shows the influence of other artists working at the same time, notably Singer Sargent, Arthur Hacker RA (1858-1919) and Herbert James Draper...

Exceptional 17th Century Flemish Verdure and Mythological Tapestry
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A spectacular flemish 17 century combined verdure and mythological handwoven wool tapestry in a simple palette of beige, green, brown and blue, framed with a complete floral border and its original protective burlap backing .Combining romanticism, classicism and baroque artistry, this tapestry is a quintessential example of this highly evolved art form that flourished in Dutch-influenced Flanders throughout the 17th century. The exact mythological event represented by the tapestry is unfortunately not known and I urge viewers and readers of this write up who may recognize the scene to please contact us with the information, for which we would be greatly appreciative. The scene depicted by the tapestry revolves around three life-size classically draped figures with the leading protagonist consisting of a plumed helmeted and uniformed high ranking Roman official in the foreground taking up the entire left hand side of the tapestry. The official is holding the hand of a young woman and is pointing in the direction of a partially visible masted galleon suggesting a departure or a sea faring...

19th Century, Irish Marine Botany Specimens Made for the Niagara Falls Museum
Located in Hamilton, Ontario
19th century Irish Marine Botany Specimens made for Thomas Barnett of the Niagara Falls Museum. Seaweed samples were collected off the West Coast of Ireland in 1871 by Mrs. Maria J.W. Kirkwood and presented to Thomas Barnett Esquire, proprietor of the Niagara Falls Museum. These come as two separately framed pieces with hand embroidered lettering surrounded by seaweed and a poem written by Victoria Hall. Free shipping within the United States and Canada. The Niagara Falls Museum was a museum most notable for being the oldest Canadian museum (1827), as well as for having housed the mummy of Ramesses I for 140 years before its return to Egypt in 2003. It was founded by Thomas Barnett of Birmingham, England and underwent a few vocational changes in its history. More on Thomas Barnett and the Niagara Falls Museum. Thomas Barnett was born on December the 4th, 1799 near Birmingham, England. He moved to Canada in the early 1820s and opened the Niagara Falls Museum in 1827 at the base of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Barnett had a passion for collecting oddities. He retrofitted a former brewery house to exhibit his private collection. Although Barnett was aware of the collection patterns of his North American contemporaries, his own approach bore an uncanny similarity to the British tradition, such as the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the first traditional museum in Britain. The Niagara Falls Museum had humble beginnings. In 1827, the first museum contained Thomas Barnett's own cabinet of taxidermic curiosities. Although the details were not documented, the collection was likely composed of a number of mounted animals of local origin, combined with a smattering of Native American artifacts. Barnett's collection however rapidly grew. Prior to 1844, an account of the museum's contents stated that there were over 5000 items, including bipeds, quadrupeds, birds, fish, insects, reptiles, shells, minerals, and Native American curiosities. Through the first fifty years of its existence, the Niagara Falls Museum continued to acquire similar artifacts through the diligent efforts of the Barnett family and their associates. In 1854, Sydney Barnett (son of Thomas Barnett) made the first of his three trips to Egypt (two by himself and one with Dr. J. Douglas of Montreal) and purchased four mummies as well as a host of other Egyptian antiquities. In 1857, mastodon remains were discovered in St. Thomas, Ontario and later placed in the museum. In 1859 an inventory of the museum's contents included, in addition to the previously mentioned artifacts, an egg collection...
