About the Item

A large, richly colored hand blocked French wall hanging by traditional French company Artis Flora, circa early 20th century. This beautiful tapestry from Paris titled "Le Concert" is woven on the jacquard loom in 100% cotton and is based on an 18th century design originally woven at the Royal Gobelins Manufactory, Paris, in the 18th Century. Measures approx. 89”H x 69”W. Set with 8 metal bars on verso for hanging. About The Royal Gobelins Manufactory: The Royal Gobelins Manufactory, located in Paris, France, was one of the most prestigious tapestry workshops in Europe. It was established in the 17th century under the patronage of King Louis XIV of France. The workshop was originally founded by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the Minister of Finance for Louis XIV, in 1662. The Gobelins Manufactory specialized in producing high-quality tapestries, which were used to decorate royal residences, including the Palace of Versailles. The designs for these tapestries were often commissioned from prominent artists of the time, such as Charles Le Brun. The workshop employed skilled weavers who used traditional techniques to create intricate and detailed tapestries, often depicting scenes from mythology, history, or contemporary life. These tapestries were highly prized for their artistic beauty and craftsmanship and were considered a symbol of wealth and status. The Gobelins Manufactory continues to produce tapestries to this day, although its focus has shifted from royal commissions to creating tapestries for public and private clients, as well as preserving and restoring historical tapestries. Additionally, the site now houses the Mobilier National, a government agency responsible for managing the French national furniture and art collections.
