"Crane" Kite by Michael Thompson
By Michael Thompson
Located in Chicago, IL
Chicago-based artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites crafted from split bamboo frames covered with stretched muslin and a collage of vintage Asian ephemera—including fragments of fabric, scrolls, drawings, and books collected during his travels. This kite entitled "Crane" draws its title from the quiet painting in the lower left corner of a white crane perched on the edge of a water pail. The kite is anchored by a large panel of floral silk brocade, darkened by inky pigments that drip downwards and break up the orderly design. A panel of rice paper adds bright blue color and washes of cool watercolors unite disparate fragments with irregular motion. Instructional calligraphy paintings and architectural blueprints...

Early 20th Century Southern American Folk Art Painting
Located in Chicago, IL
A captivating and intriguing early 20th century Southern American folk art panel, found in Mississippi, depicting a figure with what appears to be African tribal headgear, and wearing a white collared shirt with black suit jacket. The line work and attention to detail is extraordinary and mysterious, with the artist choosing to incorporate a natural knot in the board to form the mouth of the figure, and the left half of the drawing showing shading, but seemingly left unfinished. The frame is not terribly old, and is constructed from splatter-painted boards...

Framed American Minimalist Drawing, 1978
Located in Chicago, IL
A chic and impactful American Minimalist geometric drawing with two large charcoal circles, several interlocking white circles, and set against a bold cobalt blue pastel background. Framed in a custom oak gallery frame. Signed and dated illegibly in the LR. Signed 'Frank 1978' on the reverse. The Minimalism art movement is one of the most influential of the 1960s and 70s, among a number of artists who were moving away from Abstract Expressionism, favoring a sleek, geometric aesthetic instead. These artists wanted to create art that referred only to itself, allowing the viewer an immediate, purely visual response. The personal, gestural elements of Abstract Expressionism were stripped away with the aim to reveal the objective, visual elements of art. Important Minimalist artists...

Pair of Framed Chinese Ancestor Portraits, circa 1880s
Located in Chicago, IL
Believing that the departed continue to hold influence over the lives of the living, many Chinese households honor their ancestors in private family rituals, invoking their spirits for long life, health, and prosperity. Commemorative portraits, which came into vogue in the late Ming and Qing dynasties, were commissioned specifically for ancestor worship and were believed to house the spirits of the deceased. When properly cared for, one's ancestors were believed to be a powerful source of honor, protection, and good luck. This pair of ancestor portraits was hand-painted in the late-19th century and beautifully depicts a Qing-dynasty couple. While some ancestral portraits offer a more stylized representation of one's ancestors, this particular pair is painted with incredible realism and life-like expressions. Rather than depict the pair in a regal hall wearing elaborate finery, the couple is shown in a quiet home environment, seated at either end of a square tea table. Their surroundings are minimal, practically undecorated, and they wear simple, matching blue silk robes. Two young children stand beside them, each trying to capture the attention of their grandparent. We love the painting's close attention to detail and the glimpse it offers of Qing-dynasty interiors - from the carved apron of the marble-top table to the red silk lotus slippers...

Chinese Reverse Glass Painting of Taoist Immortals, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Popularized during the Qing dynasty, reverse glass painting requires an artist to essentially work backwards, starting with details and shading before adding color and form. Lending the finished work a subtle three-dimensional effect, this exacting technique doesn't allow for any corrections, and is only revealed to its full effect when the glass pane is turned around. This example dates to the late 19th century and depicts the Taoist immortals He Xiangu and Cao Guojiu. Said to have attained immortality through their studies of the natural world, the Eight Immortals each represent a different condition in life and impart blessings of prosperity and longevity. The charming scene is likely one of a set of...
