Vintage Sensenich Wooden Propeller, circa 1945
By Sensenich
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is a beautiful wooden Sensenich propeller, dating to 1945. The propeller is stamped "H 3668" on the rear of the hub. Given its construction and designation, it is likely this propeller was flown at the very end of WWII. The Sensenich Propeller Company was established in 1932 to manufacture fixed-pitch wood aircraft propellers for the growing aviation market. The company started in Pennsylvania by two brothers. Their first experiments included pushing propeller-driven farm wagons down the narrow dirt roads of Lancaster County and, in the winter, strapping an engine and their wooden propeller to an ice sled, which they tethered by a hundred-foot hawser to a stout stake set...

Ulysses by James Joyce, First Authorized American Edition, 1934
By James Joyce
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Joyce, James. Ulysses. New York: Random House, 1934. First Authorized American Edition. Octavo. In publisher’s original red and black stamped cream cloth boards, original first issue printed dust jacket, and a custom folding slipcase. Presented is a first authorized American edition of Ulysses, a modernist novel by James Joyce. The book was published in New York by Random House, in 1934. It is presented in its original red and black stamped cream cloth boards, original first issue printed dust jacket, and a custom folding slipcase. James Joyce originally conceived of Ulysses as a short story to be included in Dubliners, but decided to publish it as a long novel instead. Ulysses takes place on a single day, June 16, 1904, in Dublin, and follows three main characters: Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom and his wife Molly Bloom. Divided into 18 episodes, Joyce drastically shifts narrative style with each new episode, completely abandoning the previously accepted notions of plot, setting, and characters. It is considered by many to be the paramount in Modernist literature. Ulysses has a very interesting publishing history, with at least 18 editions and numerous variations of each edition. It was first serialized in the American journal The Little Review...

1889 "The Pacific States and Territories"
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an uncommon 1889 map of the western United States, titled “The Pacific States and Territories.” The vertical map depicts the Western states at the time: Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. They are bordered by British America to the north, Lower California, Mexico and Texas to the south, and North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Texas to the east. The map provides a fascinating look at the western states of the United States, just before the turn of the century. In addition to excellent topographical detail of mountain ranges, the map identifies towns and cities, rivers, lakes, deserts and valleys. Crisscrossing across the states, railroad routes are identified with hatched blacklines. Death Valley, Yosemite, Yellowstone National Park, as well as the key mining towns, like Virginia City...

1876 "Gettysburg, The Repulse of Longstreet's Assault." Engraving
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented here is an 1876 engraving of John B. Bachelder and James Walker’s Gettysburg. The Repulse of Longstreet’s Assault. The engraved scene depicts the decisive battle on the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Researched by the photographer and topographer John B. Bachelder and painted by James Walker, the original painting was created in 1870. This detailed engraving was done by H. B. Hall Jr. and published by James Drummond Ball. Otherwise called Pickett’s Charge, the battle occurred on July 3, 1863. Pickett’s corp commander, Lieutenant General James Longstreet was placed in charge of the attack despite his hesitations. Longstreet’s central role led to the title of the work, Repulse of Longstreet’s Assault. In an attempt to gain control of an important supply route, nine Confederate brigades charged across three-quarters of a mile of open ground against cannon fire to take Cemetery Ridge from the defending Union Army. Despite their overwhelming numbers, the Confederate forces were repelled with considerable casualties marking not only a decisive victory for the Union, but also the beginning of the slow defeat of Lee’s Army. The furthest the charging forces advanced before being repulsed would forever be known as the “High Water Mark of the Confederacy.” The Confederate army never recovered from the losses at Gettysburg and it effectively ended Lee’s campaign into Pennsylvania. The engraving gives the perspective from the Union rear, one that encompasses most of the battlefield, from Big Round Top on the left to the northern reaches of Cemetery Ridge on the right. The Confederate lines at Seminary Ridge are in the far distance, partially obscured by bursting shells. The image centers on the main Confederate assault, in the vicinity of what today are known as "The Copse" and "The Bloody Angle." The composition has elemen...

1875 "North America" Map by J. Bartholomew
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original 1875 map of “North America.” The map was issued in Volume 1 of the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, published in Edinburgh. The map was drawn by famous Scottish mapmaker John Bartholomew. The map depicts North America, to include Greenland, the Dominion of Canada, the United States, Mexico, the countries of Central America, and the islands of the West Indies. Prominent rivers, mountain ranges, and cities are labeled on the map, and country borders are emphasized in red. The Encyclopædia Britannica has been published continuously since 1768, appearing in fifteen official editions. The landmark ninth edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, often called "the Scholar's Edition," was published from January 1875 to 1889 in 25 volumes. The editor and author of the “Foreword” was Thomas Spencer Baynes, the first English-born editor after a series of Scots. After 1880, Baynes was assisted by William Robertson Smith. The 9th edition is often lauded as a high point among early editions for scholarship. The 9th edition was far more luxurious than any previously printed Encyclopædia Britannicas, with thick boards and quality leather bindings, premier paper, and a production which took full advantage of the technological advances of printing in the years between the 1850s and 1870s. The publishers took advantage of the new ability to print large graphic illustrations on the same pages as the text, as opposed to limiting illustrations to separate copper plate engravings. Although this technology had first been used in a primitive fashion the 7th edition, and to a much lesser extent in the 8th, in the 9th edition there were thousands of quality illustrations and maps set...

Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original wood engraving is titled “The Restaurant of the House of Representatives, Washington, DC.” It was published as a double-page image, in the August 12, 1893 issue of the famous 19th century newspaper Harper’s Weekly. The print was illustrated by Charles Stanley Reinhardt. The House Restaurant, a unique part of life in the Capitol, has been in the same location since the 1857 Capitol Expansion. Congressional members’ busy work schedule made the availability of food on site a necessity. But the restaurant also served as an informal meeting spot for members to continue conversations and deal making. This 1893 print illustrates the convivial atmosphere. Details including elegantly dressed tables...

"Shall We Be More Tender with Our Dollar" Vintage WWI 2nd Liberty Loan Poster
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original WWI poster was issued as part of the Second Liberty Loan run and dates to 1917. The poster depicts a young soldier holding an American flag in one hand and his uniformed hat in the other. Next to him, a sailor holds a leaflet outstretched toward the viewer. The leaflet is printed with an emblem of the Statue of Liberty and says “We Depend On You.” At the top of the poster is a quote by Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo, “Shall we be more tender with our dollars than we are with the lives of our sons?” The quote is printed in white block letters on a red field. Below, the poster encourages viewers to “Buy A United States Government Bond of the 2nd Liberty Loan of 1917” in white block letters on a blue field. The poster was printed for the U.S. Treasury by Edwards & Deutsch Litho. Co. in Chicago. The poster encourages Americans to help with the war effort by purchasing bonds to finance the war. Each of the four Liberty Loan campaigns (two in 1917, two in 1918) and the Victory Loan campaign of early 1919 aimed for rapid subscription in the loan and bond programs, to generate quick funding of the war effort. Subscribing to the bonds became a symbol of patriotic duty in the United States and introduced the idea of financial securities to many citizens for the first time. Working Americans could buy bonds...

46-Star American Flag Printed in Drum Star Configuration
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is an original 46-Star American parade flag, celebrating Oklahoma statehood. Each star on the flag's canton represents a state in the Union at the time. The official flag design would update every July 4th, to include any new states added to the Union in the past year. Oklahoma, the 46th state, entered the Union on November 16, 1907. As such, this 46–star flag was the official flag of the United States from July 4, 1908, until July 4, 1912. The silk flag has a dark blue canton with 46 white printed stars. The stars are printed in an 7-8-8-8-8-7 row configuration, or “Drum design.” The flag design is completed with 13 alternating red and white stripes, each stripe representing one of the original thirteen colonies. The land that comprises Oklahoma today was added to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Throughout the 19th century, the U.S. government relocated Indian tribes from the southeastern United States to the area, and by 1900, over 30 Indian tribes had been moved to what was originally called the Indian Territories. At the same time, ranchers in Texas began to move into the area in search of new pasture lands. Although stipulations in the Indian Relocation Act agreed that the land would forever be Indian Territory, the promise of fertile farmland trumped the government’s promise of sovereignty. On April 22, 1889, they opened the land to settlement by homesteaders, creating a land run in which settlers, called “Boomers,” were allowed to cross the Texas or Arkansas border at a particular hour to claim homesteads. Settlers who illegally crossed the border earlier to stake prime land were called “sooners,” which eventually became the state’s nickname. Wagons and the Santa Fe railroad carried cartloads of men and women to blank town sites and building plots, creating ten thousand-people communities in a matter of days. The following year, the region was further divided into Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory...

Fleming, Ian. Diamonds are Forever. London: Jonathan Cape, 1956. First edition, first printing. Octavo. Rebound in full black calf leather, with diamond stamped boards, gilt tooling, gilt titles, and raised bands to spine, and a spectacular quarter leather clamshell case. This is the first edition, first printing of Ian Fleming’s fourth James Bond novel, Diamonds are Forever. The book was published by Jonathan Cape in London on March 26, 1956. It was the first novel Fleming sold to the newspaper, a decision that led to an overall rise in the novel’s sales. Book sales were also assisted by the press in November 1956, following the visit of Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden...
