OCEANA EVENT AT BUCK HOUSE
By Susanna Salk
On February 2nd, Buck House will debut the launch of Susan Cohn Rockefeller’s Rocknrola (ITALICS) jewelry – designed with the hope of helping preserve and protect the world’s oceans. “All proceeds from the evening will benefit Oceana, the world’s largest non-profit advocate for the health of oceans,” says Buck. “Susan and I sit on the Advisory Council, Susan being the Chair, and let me tell you, this is a organization that knows how to get the job done.”
“The vision behind Rocknrola was to design pieces as versatile as the little black dress,” says Rockefeller, who includes in her list of achievements, environmentalist, author and filmmaker (her latest film, “ Making the Crooked Straight” will debut on HBO on April 14). “The pieces —all made with sustainable materials and sourced through an environmental lens— seek to speak to all age groups in the post-recession reality through a mix of new, old, edgy and classic jewelry.” And while Rockefeller took her design cues from nature’s gentle beauty, admirers should not be lulled into forgetting the collection’s foremost intention:, "As an environmental activist I found myself thinking: why can't people Wake Up, Stop Idling, and Kick Some Ass? We've carried these edgy messages, and other bold messages, throughout our lines."
All of this involves a leap of faith. “There’s an exhilaration involved in launching a new business,” says Rockefeller. “In both love and business you embark upon the unknown road of fate and faith. But I have loved every minute so far: staying up until dawn and figuring out how to distill what I enjoy most about nature into beautiful nuggets of silver and gold.”
“What I love,” adds Buck, “is that this jewelry has written content as part of its design. The sentiments are pure and universal. Very much like the charity it benefits.” Buck first met Rockefeller at a viewing of her film “A Sea Change,” which follows one man’s quest to track the current climate of the ocean’s health. “I was so moved by the clarity of vision in this film that when I was asked to join the Ocean Council that Sue heads, I immediately said ‘yes.’” So while February 2nd offers an exciting opportunity for jewelry lovers (Buck House will continue to carry some of the pieces afterwards as the line will also be available at RocknRola.com), buying seashell earrings or seahorse necklace is also like giving Mother Nature an early Valentine’s Day gift.
Buck is thrilled about her once small shop that has grown and become a source of inspiration and philanthropy. She smiles and ponders, “Who knows where all this will go?,” and adds, “but at the end of the day, we cannot afford to ignore the planet’s oceans as they are our lifeline.”
