Dusk from the Tomb of Lorenzo di Piero de'Medici - Original Ink Drawing
Located in Chicago, IL
This particular drawing is a study of the sculpture at the Medici Chapel in Florence, Italy. The artist creates a true to life representation of the sculpture in question by incorporating techniques of classical academic drawing such as cross hatching and gesture based mark making in order to create volumes and give the study an overall three-dimensionality.

-ARTIST STATEMENT-
I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis
personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my
narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I
use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered
reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art
historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an
Everyman who is at odds with society and his self.
Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its
overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their
tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow
seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid.
This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world
through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light.
-BIO-
Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Christopher drawings are represented by Ann Nathan Gallery in Chicago, and he shows his prints across the nation.

Anna Held, dans Toutes ces Dames au Theatre, recto and Footit et Chocolat, verso
Lithograph, printed on newsprint, 1894
Monogramed in the stone (see photo)
Published in La revue Blanche, in the NIB supplement which accompanied the January 1895 issue
This impression of the regular edition is considered "Uncommon" by Wittrock, even though it was printed in an edition of c. 2000. Because of the fragile nature of the paper, the fact that it was folded and inserted in La Revue Blanche, my guess is that many have been ruined since it was published, hence "uncommon".
Reference: Wittrock 87 recto and 88 verso
Condition: Sun staining to the recto image of Anna Held. Small tears at the edges of the folds (as issued).
Archival framing with double sided windows. Gilt finished corner frame with linen recto and rag verso matting.
Sheet size: 14 x 9 3/4 inches
Provenance: Ira Lipman, Memphis, TN. Lipman was an extremely successful business man and engaged in generous philanthropy.
Chocolat was the stage name of Rafael Padilla (ca. 1865/68 – 4 November 1917), a clown who performed in a Paris circus around the turn of the 20th century. Rafael was of Afro-Cuban descent and was one of the earliest successful black entertainers in modern France. He was the first black clown to play a lead role in a circus pantomime act, and with his longtime partner George Foottit they revolutionized the art of clowning by pairing the sophisticated white clown with the foolish auguste clown.
Ira Ackerman Lipman (November 15, 1940 – September 16, 2019) was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was the founder and chairman of Guardsmark, a privately owned security company with a payroll of 17,000 employees and 130 offices in the United States, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and France. In 2015, he sold Guardsmark to Universal Protection Service, the largest private security company in the United States, and he served as its vice chairman until its 2016 merger with AlliedBarton. He was called "a pioneer in the private security guard business". His work was cited by the United States Department of Justice's Law Enforcement Assistance Administration and the United States House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations. He supported the arts in Memphis, Tennessee and Judeo-Christian interfaith dialogue in the United States.
Lipman served on the boards of trustees of the Brooks Memorial Art Gallery and the Memphis Academy of Arts as well as on the Advisory Council of the Chickasaw Council Boy Scouts of America. He established the Alexis de Tocqueville...

Died November 13, 2012 (aged 101), New York City, US
Will Barnet (May 25, 1911 – November 13, 2012) was an American artist known for his paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints depicting the human figure and animals, both in casual scenes of daily life and in transcendent dreamlike worlds.
Biography
Born in 1911 in Beverly, Massachusetts, Barnet knew by the age of ten that he wanted to be an artist. As a student, he studied with Philip Leslie Hale at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and viewed first-hand John Singer Sargent at work on the murals of the Boston Public Library. In 1930, Barnet studied at the Art Students League of New York, with Stuart Davis and Charles Locke, beginning his long association with the school. Here he concentrated on painting as well as printmaking, and, in 1936, he became the official printer for the Art Students League. There, he later instructed students in the graphic arts at the school and taught alongside the likes of Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Robert Beverly Hale and Richard Pousette-Dart. Barnet influenced a generation of artists, including James Rosenquist, Knox Martin, Emil Milan, Paul Jenkins, Ethel Fisher...

The figure is monumental and sculptural; her strength and vitality embodied in a build- up of energy in her body mass. Her presence is conveyed through strength of form and articulation of her body. Whilst her face is treated with reserve, her expression reflects an inner radiance and beauty. Drawing and sculpture were separate practices for Moore. The drawings helped establish Moore’s reputation and were widely seen as complementary presences in their own right. In the 1930’s drawing became a central practice not just as a preliminary to sculpture, and the word ‘drawing’ gradually became less than adequate to describe these works which became recognized by the critics as pictorial art by the end of the 1930’s. As a draughtsman, pictorial artist, or perhaps even painter as he should properly be thought of at this point in his career, Moore was able to work fast with ideas flooding onto the paper, ideas relating to sculpture but which he elaborated and embellished with detail that was essentially pictorial. During the 1930’s pictorial art gave free range to his imagination more readily than sculpture. Pictorial art could reflect on the human condition by means of narratives developed through interaction of internal parts in a way that single-object sculpture could not.
Life drawings extend to the early 1930s, but are rare later on, were generally made on larger sheets. ‘I find drawing a useful outlet for ideas which there is not enough time time to realize as sculpture…Every few months, I stop carving for two or three weeks and do life drawing. At one time I used to mix the two, perhaps carving during the day and drawing from a model during the evening. But I found this unsatisfactory – the two activities interfered with each other, for the mental approach to each is different..Stone.. is so different from flesh and blood that one cannot carve directly from life without almost the certainty of ill-treating the material. Drawing and carving are so different that a shape or size or conception which ought to be satisfting in a drawing will be totally wrong realized as stone..In my sculpture I do not draw directly on my memory or observations of a particular object, but rather use whatever comes up from my general fund of knowledge of natural forms’. HM
The drawings demonstrate that Moore was a pictorial artist as well as a sculptor. ‘I wonder … very impertinently whether Mr Moore may not be a painter who has taken the wrong turning’. (Raymond Mortimer, critic) Moore’s imagination needed the expressive possibilities of both painting and sculpture.
‘The construction of the human figure, the tremendous variety of balance, of size, of rhythm, all those things make the human being much more difficult to get right, in a drawing, than anything else…its not just a matter of training – you can’t understand it without being emotionally involved…it really is a deep, strong fundamental struggle to understand oneself as much as to understand what one’s drawing’. (HM) Moore wanted to express what made a drawn figure real by expressing vitality through organization of form. He liked working quickly so that the vitality of the model was seen as liveliness and he could reflect volume in the drawing. His sketchbook notes show a constant emphasis on the idea that the human body gains strength in drawing from being conceived in terms of mass. He prioritises certain kinds of formal arrangement that stress organization of mass, over representational accuracy. In that way vitality becomes an attribute of form, not something brought in from the outside to give the superficial effect of liveliness. Moore avoided gestures with the hands, preferring what he called ‘pent up energy’ expressed through relation of masses, to the spent energy of limb movements which are rare after his very early work. He also avoided particular facial expression, and any sense of the model using gesture or expression to address the viewer.
Curt Valentin and Buchholz Gallery, New York Curt Valentin was born in Hamburg Germany in 1902. After completing his education, Valentin became a modern art dealer in Berlin. In 1934 Valentin returned to Hamburg to work in the Buchholz Gallery. Owned by Karl Buchholz, this gallery maintained two businesses: a bookstore in the front and, in the rear, an art gallery devoted to the modern art classified as degenerate by Hitler. In 1937 Valentin immigrated to the United States with a sufficient number of modern German paintings...
