Work Description
A luminous view of Barcelona’s Port Vell, with the neo-Baroque Customs building and the Portal de la Pau reflected in the calm waters of the harbor. In the foreground, sailboats and fishing boats form a horizontal frieze that contrasts with the vertical silhouettes of palm trees and towers in the background.
The brushstroke is free, broken, rich in impasto and chromatic transparency, capturing the trembling air of the Mediterranean. Ochres, pinks and blues merge into a vibrant atmosphere, characteristic of the artistic maturity of Rafael Durán Benet, who managed to infuse urban landscapes with the same poetic spirit present in his views of Cadaqués and the Costa Brava.
Artistic Commentary
Rafael Durán Benet represents the continuity of post-war Catalan Impressionism, heir to Joaquim Mir and to his uncle Rafael Benet i Vancells, yet with a looser and more modern interpretation. His painting blends architectural precision with chromatic freedom, achieving a balance between structure and emotion.
In this work, port architecture becomes a pictorial motif where color and light are the true protagonists. The sense of movement on the water and the warm atmosphere evoke the same sensitivity found in artists such as Ignacio Gil Sala, Jordi Pagans Montsalvatje...

A superb, finely-detailed impression, with selectively wiped plate tone, on heavy Rives cream wove paper; full margins (1 1/2 to 2 1/4 inches), in excellent condition.
The subject of the print is the lower Manhattan cityscape just before the Depression.
Image size 8 3/4 x 6 13/16 inches (222 x 173 mm); sheet size 12 3/4 x 10 inches (324 x 254 mm).
Impressions of this work are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Zimmerli Art Museum.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
'There is something about the atmospheric vibrancy of an etching which imparts a peculiar and irresistible life to architectural drawing...A copper plate offers receptive ground to the meticulously detailed drawing which so often appeals to the architect'. —Samuel Chamberlain, from the Catalogue Raisonné of his prints.
Samuel V. Chamberlain (1896 - 1975), printmaker, photographer, author, and teacher, was born in Iowa. His family moved to Aberdeen, Washington in 1901, and in 1913, Chamberlain enrolled in the University of Washington in Seattle, where he studied architecture under Carl Gould. By 1915, he was enrolled in the School of Architecture of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. With the United States' involvement in the First World War, Chamberlain sailed to France, where he volunteered in the American Field Service. In 1918, he was transferred to the United States Army to complete his tour of duty. After the war, he returned to Boston and resumed his architectural studies, which he eventually discontinued, working for a few years as a commercial artist.
Chamberlain received the American Field Service Scholarship in 1923, which he used to travel to Spain, North Africa, and Italy. In 1924 he was living in Paris, where he studied lithography with Gaston Dorfinant and etching and drypoint with Edouard Léon, publishing his first etching the following year. In 1927, he studied drypoint with Malcolm Osborne...

Christopher Clark's "Paris Rainy Cafe" is an original, hand made oil and acrylic painting that depicts a night scene of a bustling cityscape in France.
Christopher has been an artist since early childhood, when he would watch Bob Ross on PBS and mimic the famed oil painter’s art with crayons. He considers himself a self-educated artist, with his studies ranging from personal training with contemporary masters, to classical academic art technique, with much inspiration from 19th Century art and the Impressionist Movement. Christopher lived in Italy for a time, immersing himself in Italian culture and art, which continues to influence his painting. His fan base has grown considerably since his return to the US, gaining the attention of Lucasfilm and Marvel Fine Art, which both signed him as an officially licensed artist in 2016. Other clients include George Lucas, Major League Baseball, Louisville Slugger, and Fender Guitars.
Christopher’s painting skills are not his only talent in the arts. He has won several national swing dance championship competitions, and also studies tango and blues dancing. He has played guitar since the age of 12, and during his time as lead guitarist for a rock band, he opened for Blue Oyster Cult and Eddie Money...
