Watercolor Painting of the Monseigneur News Theatre, by Reginald Marsh, 1925

By Reginald Marsh

Located in New York, NY

Reginald Marsh, 1898 – 1954 Monseigneur News Theatre, 1925 Signed and dated at lower right: 'Reginald Marsh 1925' Watercolor on card 8 x 11 inches Born in Paris to parents who were American artists, Reginald Marsh became an adept illustrator at an early age. His family returned to the United States in 1900. Upon graduating from Yale University, Marsh moved to New York and in 1922 took a job as an illustrator at the New York Daily News. For the paper he provided cartoons of vaudeville and burlesque shows. In 1925 Marsh went to work for a new magazine -- The New Yorker -- as one of its original cartoonists. That same year he married Betty Burroughs, daughter of the paintings curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Later that year they traveled to Europe where Marsh discovered the work of the old masters at the Louvre in Paris and British museums. With a sketchbook always on hand, he wandered the streets of Europe and began depicting bums or what he called figures of failure. Upon the couple’s return, Marsh, now with a serious interest in pursuing art, enrolled at the Art Students League where he studied under George Luks, John Sloan, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. This work, Monseigneur News Theatre, is accompanied by a letter from Marsh Scholar Professor Norman Sasowsky, University of Delaware...

Titled and annotated '30.00' in pencil, in the artist's hand, bottom margin. Matted to museum standards, unframed. A superb, finely-detailed impression, with selectively wiped plate tone, on heavy Rives cream wove paper; full margins (1 1/2 to 2 1/4 inches), in excellent condition. The subject of the print is the lower Manhattan cityscape just before the Depression. Image size 8 3/4 x 6 13/16 inches (222 x 173 mm); sheet size 12 3/4 x 10 inches (324 x 254 mm). Impressions of this work are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Zimmerli Art Museum. ABOUT THE ARTIST 'There is something about the atmospheric vibrancy of an etching which imparts a peculiar and irresistible life to architectural drawing...A copper plate offers receptive ground to the meticulously detailed drawing which so often appeals to the architect'. —Samuel Chamberlain, from the Catalogue Raisonné of his prints. Samuel V. Chamberlain (1896 - 1975), printmaker, photographer, author, and teacher, was born in Iowa. His family moved to Aberdeen, Washington in 1901, and in 1913, Chamberlain enrolled in the University of Washington in Seattle, where he studied architecture under Carl Gould. By 1915, he was enrolled in the School of Architecture of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. With the United States' involvement in the First World War, Chamberlain sailed to France, where he volunteered in the American Field Service. In 1918, he was transferred to the United States Army to complete his tour of duty. After the war, he returned to Boston and resumed his architectural studies, which he eventually discontinued, working for a few years as a commercial artist. Chamberlain received the American Field Service Scholarship in 1923, which he used to travel to Spain, North Africa, and Italy. In 1924 he was living in Paris, where he studied lithography with Gaston Dorfinant and etching and drypoint with Edouard Léon, publishing his first etching the following year. In 1927, he studied drypoint with Malcolm Osborne...

Lyon has been called "San Francisco's Brassaï," and has also been compared to Cartier-Bresson, Atget, and Andre Kertesz, but with a San Francisco twist. The lifelong San Francisco Native happily admits his debt to those icons.

Now at eighty-eight years old, his nonstop career reaches back to the early 1940s and embracing news, fashion, architecture, advertising, and food. In the golden years of magazines, his picture credits were everywhere from LIFE to VOGUE. He is now combining his extensive picture files for galleries, publishers, and print collectors. c) The Estate of Fred Lyon Courtesy. Peter Fetterman Gallery

Parisian Street Scene

By Roland Dubuc

Located in London, GB

'Parisian Street Scene', watercolour on art paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). This artwork is a delightful depiction of a Parisian street which scales the hill to the neighbourhood of Montmartre, the home of the basilica of Sacré-Cœur. DuBuc's artworks serve as a love letter to the city of Paris and are recognised by his incredibly charming style. The signed artwork is in good overall condition and has been newly framed with anti-reflective glass. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the piece may be provided. About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...

Lake Street

Lake Street

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Lake Street, c. 1920 -30s, oil on board, 12 x 9 inches, signed lower right and verso, titled verso About the Painting At the center of Oscar Daniel Soellner’s Lake Street, we see the stairway leading to an elevated railway station on what is now Chicago’s Green Line route. When its first section opened in 1893 as the second permanent elevated rapid transit line in Chicago, this route was known as the Lake Street Elevated Railroad. Chicago’s “L,” like the New York subway and rapid transit system, played an instrumental role in the development of the urban economy and the overall look and feel of the city. The formal aspects of urban railroads and the role they played in efficiently moving large number of everyday citizens across America’s growing metropolises were catnip for many American Scene painters during the first half of the 20th Century. Here, Soellner uses the techniques of the impressionists and the palette of the Ash Can School, to convincingly depict a classic Chicago scene...

Rincón de Horta Oil on Canvas Painting, Signed, 1950s-1960s, 46x55 cm

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Title: Rincón de Horta (Corner of Horta) Artist: Antoni Llobet Aracil (Barcelona, 1910 – 1983) Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 46 × 55 cm (18.1 × 21.7 in) Support: Canvas on stretcher Signature: Signed “A. Llobet” in the lower right corner Inscription on reverse: “Rincón de Horta” Estimated period: 1950s–1960s Condition: Good Provenance: Private collection DESCRIPTION The painting depicts a scene of vernacular architecture in Barcelona’s Horta neighborhood, at a time when it still preserved its rural and peaceful character. A dirt path opens between lush vegetation and the façades of traditional houses, wrapped in bougainvillea, ivy, and leafy trees. Light enters from the left, illuminating the walls with warm brushstrokes that contrast with the greens and violets defining the foliage. The atmosphere is serene, almost nostalgic, captured with a loose and impasto technique, especially visible in the sky and vegetation. The composition showcases the painter’s ability to harmonize architecture and nature, conveying the tranquility of a nearly hidden corner. The vibrant brushwork and mastery of color evoke a distinctly Mediterranean sensibility, heir to post-impressionism and the legacy of Joaquim Mir. ABOUT THE ARTIST: ANTONI LLOBET ARACIL Antoni Llobet Aracil was a Catalan painter born in Barcelona in 1910 (according to some sources, 1919) and died in 1983. He trained at the Escola Superior de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi and was a pupil of masters such as José Mongrell and Joaquim Mir. In 1931, he received a scholarship to continue his studies in Rome. His career included exhibitions in Paris, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, and Mallorca, as well as his native city. He led an itinerant life that enriched his pictorial vision and allowed him to develop a plastic language characterized by free use of color, energetic brushwork, and a poetic view of the landscape. In his works, Llobet blended the impressionist tradition with a Mediterranean sense of light. He alternated natural landscapes, seascapes, rural streets, and urban corners with a rich palette and atmospheric sensitivity. He worked as a drawing and painting teacher and exhibited in prominent venues such as Grifé & Escoda in Barcelona, as well as in Palma and Inca, Mallorca. ARTISTS WITH SIMILAR STYLE The work of Antoni Llobet Aracil can be linked to that of several Catalan and Mediterranean artists through his loose technique, treatment of the landscape, and warm palette: Joaquim Mir i Trinxet – for his impasto brushwork and vibrant luminosity. Rafael Durancamps – for the intimacy and warmth of his urban and rural landscapes. Josep Mompou – for chromatic harmony and evocative simplicity. Isidre Nonell (in some late landscapes) – for dense pictorial matter and atmospheric color. Ramón Vilanova...
