Uniquely signed. The gallery acquired this historic 1963 invitation and then Jim Dine graciously signed it years later in black marker - as he was/is the only artist of the entire group who was still alive. We know of no other one in the entire world with any hand signature by any of the artists exhibited. This very rare invitation/poster was published on the occasion of this important 1963 exhibition of American painting at the Galleria Ariete, Mostra n. 94, in Milan, Italy. The roster of artists represented is literally a Who's Who of American Abstract Expressionists of the era. The Galleria dell'Ariete in Milan, Italy, opened in 1955, and ran an active exhibition until its closing in the mid-1980s. It was among the most important galleries in Italy for contemporary art, and had extensive connections with dealers, collectors, artists, and critics in Europe, the United States, and Japan. Beatrice Monti della Corte opened the Galleria dell'Ariete at Via San Andrea, 5, Milan, Italy in 1955, when she was twenty-five years old, principally as a showplace for modern art; Galleria dell'Ariete rapidly became one of the foremost Italian galleries...

This lithograph was part of the complete portfolio acquired from the estate of Pop Artist Robert Indiana, who also contributed a work to the portfolio. Documented prints from the hand signed edition of 100 rarely appear on the market. This is one of them. The work is pencil signed by Karel Appel on the front and all of the prints are unnumbered, as the complete portfolio is numbered on the colophon page - a copy of which is included for provenance.
(There was also an unsigned edition of 2000)
Chinese American artist and writer Walasse Ting, in collaboration with Sam Francis, assembled a group of the most significant Pop and Abstract Expressionist artists in America, including Andy Warhol, along with the European COBRA artists to create the definitive artistic portfolio of lithographs with accompanying text by Walasse Ting. Gunter Damisch attended the Musikgymnasium Linz and then studied medicine and German and history for a few semesters. By age 16, he had already made 150 woodcuts and attended the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg with Claus Pack, he studied from 1978 to 1983 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Maximilian Melcher and Arnulf Rainer . In 1992 he took on a visiting professorship at the Vienna Academy (master class for graphics ) in Vienna, and since 1998 he has been a full professor there. From 1997 until his untimely death in 2016, he was head of the graphic arts department at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. the 1980s Damisch was a member of the Viennese punk band Molto Brutto, where he played bass and organ. Gunter Damisch lived and worked in Vienna and Freidegg . He was one of the most important international representatives of contemporary Austrian art because of his unmistakable, convincing and consistently formulated repertoire of colors and shapes (reminiscent of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.) He worked in stone lithos, woodcuts, lithograph, artists’ books like a free jazz virtuoso, making huge, one-of-a-kind pieces with collage, drawing, painting, woodcut and monotype on the same sheet. In 1978, the Junge Wilde painting style arose in the German-speaking world in opposition to established avant garde, minimal art and conceptual art. It was linked to the similar Transavanguardia movement in Italy, USA (neo-expressionism) and France (Figuration Libre). The Junge Wilde painted their expressive paintings in bright, intense colors and with quick, broad brushstrokes very much influenced by Professor at the Academy of Art in Berlin, Karl Horst Hödicke They were also known as the Neue Wilde.
