Woven Rush Chair For Sale on 1stDibs

With a vast inventory of beautiful furniture at 1stDibs, we’ve got just the woven rush chair you’re looking for. Frequently made of natural fiber, wood and rush, every woven rush chair was constructed with great care. If you’re shopping for a woven rush chair, we have 138 options in-stock, while there are 11 modern editions to choose from as well. There are many kinds of the woven rush chair you’re looking for, from those produced as long ago as the 18th Century to those made as recently as the 21st Century. When you’re browsing for the right woven rush chair, those designed in Mid-Century Modern, Arts and Crafts and Louis XV styles are of considerable interest. You’ll likely find more than one woven rush chair that is appealing in its simplicity, but Mel Smilow, Charlotte Perriand and Vico Magistretti produced versions that are worth a look.

How Much is a Woven Rush Chair?

Prices for a woven rush chair can differ depending upon size, time period and other attributes — at 1stDibs, they begin at $395 and can go as high as $19,000, while the average can fetch as much as $2,200.

Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Woven Rush Chair
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Rush seats are chairs where the seating part is woven out of long, grass-like vegetation. After the material dries, the makers weave it to make a strong surface for sitting. Shop antique rush chairs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Woven chairs are made of many different natural and synthetic materials. These are often called wicker, rattan, cane or webbed chairs, which is more a category of how the chair is made rather than the material used. The type of material can be identified by how the chair looks and what it is used for. Synthetic materials are ideal for outdoor use, while natural, untreated materials are suitable for indoor use only. Find a variety of woven chair styles on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
To protect your woven dining chairs, try a fabric protection spray designed for the specific type of material. Follow the application directions printed on the bottle for best results. Also, wipe your chairs clean after every meal with a slightly damp cloth to reduce the risk of stains. On 1stDibs, find a range of woven dining chairs.
