A characterful set of four French rustic dining chairs from around the 1950s or 1960s, with tall ladder backs, distinctive rounded knob finials and traditional hand-woven rush seats. They have the honest, architectural quality of good country furniture and fit beautifully around a large farmhouse table. Design The frames are made of solid wood with a warm, naturally aged patina. Tall, elongated uprights topped with round knob finials hold a series of horizontal slats, and the natural rush seats add texture and warmth. The simple construction and visible joinery give the chairs a strong handcrafted character. The design reflects the French post-war interest in regional furniture, vernacular craftsmanship and natural materials. Condition Good vintage condition, with light, consistent age-related wear, natural variations in colour and small surface marks to the wood, typical of rustic furniture. The rush seats show normal wear from age but are intact and usable. The frames are structurally sound. As with all vintage seating, we recommend a check before intensive daily use. Please see the photos for details. Dimensions per chair: height 102 cm, width 46 cm, depth 48 cm, seat height 47 cm. Sold as a set of four. Style references These chairs combine particularly well with furniture in the spirit of Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Chapo, Guillerme et Chambron, Jean Touret and the Artisans de Marolles, and Audoux-Minet. They are not attributed to these designers, but share the same appreciation for solid wood, functional construction and rustic modernism. In the interior The set works well around a French farmhouse table, a long monastery table or a sculptural Brutalist dining table. The chairs suit rustic modern, French provincial, wabi-sabi, Mediterranean, Belgian-style and mid-century interiors, and they look just as good against plaster walls and stone floors as in a light, contemporary kitchen.
