Pair of French Oak and Rush Lounge Armchairs, France, 1950s A highly characterful pair of French lounge armchairs dating from the 1950s, crafted from solid oak with handwoven rush seats and backrests. The chairs have a distinctly sculptural quality, most notably expressed in the beautifully shaped armrests. Each arm flows organically outward from the angled backrest in a long, gentle curve before terminating in a softly rounded, downward-sweeping end. This elegant detail gives the otherwise robust construction an unusually fluid and inviting character. The solid oak frames have developed a rich, warm brown patina over time, highlighting the grain and handmade character of the wood. Slightly splayed legs and gently inclined backrests create a relaxed stance, while the low horizontal stretchers provide both structural strength and a pleasing architectural rhythm. The natural rush provides a beautiful contrast to the darker oak. The seats are intricately woven, while the backrests are composed of two separate woven panels, creating a subtle open space between them. Viewed from behind, the craftsmanship of the rush work becomes particularly apparent and adds another decorative dimension to the chairs.
