A pair of wonderfully characterful Dutch armchairs in solid oak with hand-woven rush seats, made around 1935. The tall backs are shaped like a shield with a gently scalloped top and a pierced clover or trefoil cut-out, the armrests rest on thick square posts, and the chairs stand on sturdy, slightly splayed legs joined by stretchers. The proportions are low and broad, like small thrones from a fairy tale, which is why these chairs are often called "storybook" chairs. The oak has a warm, mellow honey tone with a beautiful dry patina, and the natural rush seats complete the honest, rustic character. Chairs like these were made by Dutch and Belgian village carpenters in the interwar years, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and by traditional farmhouse furniture. They fit perfectly with the work of designers such as Axel Einar Hjorth, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Touret for Marolles...
