Tang Dynasty Sancai Glazed Pottery Horse
Located in Dallas, TX
Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) Sancai glazed pottery horse The cream-glazed horse is naturalistically modelled standing on a rectangular base, with the mane, tail and hooves highlighted in amber glaze. The head is gracefully curved to the left, with a green and amber glazed saddle and blanket and foliate-shaped plaques detailed with moulded toads suspending from the trappings. Measures: Height: 14.24 Inches (36.2 cm) Width: 15.5 Inches (39.35 cm) Depth: 6 Inches (15.2 cm) Provenance: An English private collection, acquired in Hong Kong in the 1980s A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this item along with a lucite base. Chinese Pottery Ceramic Glazed Mud Figure of Court Lady Tang Dynasty with Stand
Located in Studio City, CA
Simply gorgeous and so delicately and beautifully made. This work has been molded in a whitish, dense terracotta, typical of the region of the capital of Luoyang, and then attractively glazed over with various yellow, green, brown, colored glazes. We are not sure how to date this work. We believe, based on comparisons, that this piece could date as far back as the Tang Dynasty (though we are not experts and have not had this verified by one. Again, this is not our area of expertise). The white terracotta and glaze appear correct as does the figures stately pose and elaborate hairstyle which was a characteristic feature of Tang pottery women. The people of ancient China believed that some part of the essence and life force of a human being was contained in the hair. Much time and effort went into this to create elaborate coiffures that the woman proudly displayed when in public. The Tang Dynasty is also the only period in Chinese History to have known a female sovereign - The Empress Wu Zetian (625-706). Comes with Lucite display stand...

Pair Large Chinese Ming Dynasty Glazed and Painted Pottery Figures, 16th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A striking pair of large Chinese glazed and painted pottery figures, Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644), circa 16th century, China. The impressive and realistically modeled figures each portrayed standing upright upon a sancai (three color) glazed pedestal of kang table form. The man is dressed in a short black surcoat over a long robe and pants, a smart cap upon his head. His face is warm and welcoming, with wide eyes and a slight smile on his lips. He holds his hands out in front of him, palms up, almost as if shrugging, though presumably originally holding an object or offering, now lost. The woman of slightly smaller stature, and dressed in a longer surcoat over a long robe and skirt. She wears a fitted cap upon her head. Her hands also held out in front, grasping long lost objects. Her face is slightly more severe, with a somewhat pinched look, and slight frown upon her lips. The size of these figures is remarkable, as is the realism and attention to detail, almost as if they were modeled after real people, as opposed to the more common and generic Ming Dynasty pottery...

Han Dynasty Horse and Rider TL Tested
Located in Atlanta, GA
Tombs of the Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) were typically furnished with model figures and other objects believed to be necessary for a safe journey to the afterlife. Historical records indicate that when important military officials died, the imperial Han court would give them elaborate funerals, including a full military cortege. It is likely that this figure of a horse and rider was originally part of a model funerary retinue comprised of soldiers and cavalrymen that would have been placed in such a tomb. Beautifully proportioned Han dynasty polychrome painted terracotta horse and rider. The warrior is decorated with a painted orange and black tunic. A quiver is visible attached to his back. He would have originally held a wooden bow in between his hands that has rotted away over the centuries. He is riding a beautifully sculpted white horse. TL tested...
