Ban Chiang Burnished and Incised Black Pottery Vessel, 1200-800 BC, Thailand

About the Item

A large and dramatic Ban Chiang Culture burnished black pottery vessel with incised geometric designs, early period, circa 1200 - 800 BC, Khorat Plateau, Northeast Thailand. The vase of generous proportions and crafted in two parts of a highly burnished black pottery. The tall cylindrical body and wide everted mouth are joined with a distinctive flange to the shorter, splayed pedestal foot. The body decorated in three separate sections with large incised rectangular geometric shapes. The dark pottery body showing wonderful variations of color, ranging from black to gray to mottled brown. The surface of the pottery highly burnished, and now speckled with root markings from burial.
