About the Item
A striking Chinese Neolithic to Bronze Age burnished red pottery double handled saddle mouth storage jar, Siwa Culture (circa 1500 to 1100 BC), modern day Gansu Province, China.
The storage jar beautifully proportioned and featuring voluptuous curves. The wide, curvaceous body tapers down to rest on a narrow flat foot. The high shoulders with a pair of strap handles connecting to the mouth rim. The wide, concave shaped mouth, often called a "saddle mouth", is supported by a short, waisted neck.
The red pottery of buff terracotta color, with areas of gray and black scorch marks from the firing process. The pottery beautifully burnished.
The Siwa Culture (circa 1500 to 1100 BC) was centered around the Yellow River in modern day Gansu Province. It is thought to be related to the earlier Neolithic Qijia Culture (2200 to 1600 BC). The two cultures share similar pottery making techniques.
