Japanese Tagasode (Whose Sleeves?) Lacquer Incense Box, Kobako, Meiji Period
Located in Austin, TX
A fine and unusual Japanese lacquer box for incense accessories, kobako, featuring a tagasode (whose sleeves?) design, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan. The exquisite box of simple rectangular shape worked in maki-e lacquer, taka-maki-e, and raden, all against a lush ground of gold nashiji. Fitted with silver rims. The main decorative element of the box depicts a six panel folding screen, byobu, showing an interior scene with kimono strewn over a rack, a motif known as tagasode (whose sleeves), all in raised taka-maki-e lacquer and inlaid raden. The screen depicts an intimate room with tatami mats on the floor and sliding shoji doors in the background. The foreground depicts a large clothing...

19th Century Japanese Scroll Painting by Igarashi Chikusa, Poppies & Butterflies
Located in Kyoto, JP
Poppies & Butterflies Ink, pigment and gofun on silk Igarashi Chikusa (1774-1844) Signature: Chikusa Ran Zen Upper Seal: Ran Shuzen Lower Seal: Kyoho Dimensions: Scroll: H. 68” x W. 18” (172cm x 45cm) Image: H. 38.5’’ x W. 12.5’’ (98cm x 32cm) This composition shows elegant images of poppies and the butterflies that are inevitably drawn to them. It captures a momentary glimpse into a world both visually dazzling and startlingly realistic. The painting is infused with sensitivity and attention to seasonal change and weather conditions. The thin and fragile poppies are beautifully depicted with brilliant colors and the butterflies are similarly infused with life. The painting is on silk which requires extremely precise painting skills as no element once painted can be removed. Poppies were a favorite subject of Rinpa school artists through the ages. Originally they were somewhat abstracted but by the age of Sakai Hoitsu...

18th Century, Japanese Edo Period Lacquer & Chain Mail Suit of Samurai Armor
Located in Atlanta, GA
Japanese, Edo Period (1603-1868), likely late 18th century. Step into the rich tapestry of Japanese history with this exquisite 18th-century Edo Period Lacquer & Chain Mail Suit of Armor, a masterpiece that seamlessly blends martial craftsmanship with artistic elegance. Crafted during a period of unparalleled cultural refinement, this armor is a testament to the meticulous skill and dedication of Japanese artisans. The Gosuko armor, at the heart of this ensemble, embodies the traditional armor design of the Edo Period. Each meticulously lacquered plate, carefully adorned with ornate motifs, reflects not only the functional sophistication required for battle but also the aesthetic sensibilities intrinsic to Japanese art. The incorporation of chain mail adds a layer of flexibility and mobility, harmonizing the demands of protection with the fluidity required in combat. A crowning glory to this armor is the Kabuto Helmet, an iconic symbol of samurai identity and resilience. Its design not only provides formidable protection but also serves as a canvas for artistic expression. The helmet's form, combined with lacquer embellishments and a crest, creates a striking visual statement, a representation of the wearer's identity and lineage. To complete the ensemble, the armor comes with a brocade fabric, adding a touch of regality to this already magnificent piece. The interplay of textures and colors in the brocade further elevates the visual impact, turning the act of donning this armor into a ceremonial experience. For the discerning collector, this piece is presented in a lacquer armor box, meticulously crafted to safeguard and showcase the historical significance of the armor. The accompanying wood armor display stand serves as a stage, allowing this masterpiece to command attention in any setting, whether it be a private collection, museum exhibit, or a distinguished living space. Owning this 18th-century Japanese Edo Period Lacquer...

Japanese Screen of Spring on Gold Leaf
Located in Brescia, IT
It is a two-panel screen from the Taisho period, around 1920, beautifully painted in excellent detail. The best of Rinpa's school painting: large empty space that highlights a pair of mandarin ducks in the middle of the pond. On the right, flying birds give the painting a great lightness, under many multicolored flowers they celebrate spring. All very proportionate and pleasant, the dimension really interesting. Mineral pigments on gold leaf. It turns out Anonymous. Lucio Morini.
