Mansfield Porcelain Plate, Monochrome Sepia Rose W. Billingsley, 1799-1802 (1)
Located in London, GB
This is one of a pair of beautiful plates made by William Billingsley at the Mansfield Pottery, between 1799 and 1802. The plates, manufactured by Coalport, have a pleasing slightly diapered shape. They were decorated with beautiful monochrome sepia flowers and a simple gilt rim by William Billingsley. Please see separate listing for the matching plate; I would be happy to offer some discount if you interested in purchasing both plates. William Billingsley was a brilliant but notoriously difficult man who left behind a trail of debts, broken hearts and mystery - but he was also one of the most important people in the history British porcelain. Billingsley revolutionised the way British decorators painted flowers; he added a freedom and artistry that now singles out British flower painting, and he created a new technique for painting roses, which you can see in this design. Billingsley trained and worked at Derby, and then started his own pottery at Pinxton. He then left to start a decorating studio at Mansfield, where he decorated wares from various potteries, among which Derby, Coalport, Whitehead and others. After that, he spent a period in Worcester, and then went to Wales where he set up a pottery in Nantgarw, worked at the Swansea pottery for a while and then returned to Nantgarw. While in Nantgarw he created some of the best porcelain ever made, but racking up great debts. He ended up running off in the dead of night and ending his days at Coalport painting flowers. Items painted by William Billingsley are rare and very much in demand - together with Thomas Baxter's work they are probably among the most desired pieces of British porcelain. The plate is marked with an impressed 7, the number associated with Billingsley. The attribution of this plate to William Billingsley is due to the fact that he painted nearly identical flowers on a Coalport jug...

Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Goblet
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian sterling silver gilt goblet; an addition to our wine and drinks related silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver gilt goblet has a circular bulbous-shaped form onto a swept pedestal and circular spreading foot. The body of this impressive antique silver goblet is encompassed with a central band of chased and engraved scrolling foliate and floral decoration, incorporating swan and vase ornamentation, all on a matte background. The decoration to the body incorporates an impressive cartouche displaying the contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting between two arms embowed a sun in splendour. The cylindrical upper rim is encompassed with further scrolling leaf decoration, flanked with an applied dart decorated border to the nadir and a moulded border to the rim. The cast silver waisted pedestal features a spiralling bead design, incorporating scrolling motifs to the upper portion, replicating the details of an architectural column. The circular spreading foot is embellished with impressive cast figural mask designs alternating with layered leaf motifs, all ornamented with further bead decoration. The swept rim of the slightly weighted base is further ornamented with a leaf decorated festoon. This sterling silver goblet retains the original gilding; the gilding to the exterior of the goblet has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion. This exceptional goblet, crafted by the renowned silversmith Frederick Elkington of Elkington & Co, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. Condition This antique 1870s silver gilt goblet is a magnificent gauge of silver, magnificent quality and in magnificent condition. The chased decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of this Victorian silver goblet...

Masons Ironstone Jug or Pitcher in rare Cashmire Ptn, William 1Vth Ca 1833
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good, Mason's ironstone hydra jug with a snake handle in the Cashmire De Thibet pattern dating to the William 1Vth English 19th century period, circa 1832-1836 The jug has an octagonal hydra shape with a snake handle. This pattern is not often seen. It is called "Cashmire De Thibet" and is illustrated on page 60 of the book; A Guide To Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The jug is unmarked to the base as was sometimes the case, but is definitely by Mason's Ironstone as they were the only manufacturer to produce a jug in this shape with this pattern and dating to the English William 1Vth period circa 1832-1836. Overall a very nice Masons Hydra Jug or Pitcher in a rare pattern. Notes on the pattern. This unusual name of "Cashmire De Thibet" was a name applied circa 1832-1836, to summer scarves...
