We are intrigued with the novelty and the imagination of the maker in creating such a wonderful and rare design in earth tone colors including tan, green, yellow and brown. The colors on the top part have faded because of over 100 years of exposure to light but the original colors are shown in the back. The piece would be a wonderful wall art displayed either on the front or the back.
The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique. This oversized (mansion sized) Manchester Kashan is truly a masterpiece in design and color and in very good condition for a rug over one hundred years old. The rug is worn but the beauty of the design and colors can be seen. The use of the natural vegetable dyes and colors. The all-over large pattern in the design of the main field adds to the beauty of the rug appropriate for a formal room in a mansion.
The so-called “Manchester" name comes from the Merino sheep wool that was imported to Persia from Manchester England to weave this carpet. The wool was dyed locally with the vegetable dyes and the ancient wool dyeing techniques of Persian weavers. The wool is extremely soft and has a lustrous luxury and richness which shows in the rug. The "Manchester Kashan" rugs are renowned worldwide for their beauty because of their brilliant design and the high quality of the wool used in weaving the carpet.

This extremely finely hand woven Farahan rug from Western Persia has a “Herati” all-over pattern set in a navy blue color field with designs in brick red, ivory. The colors on the border include blue, green, yellow, pink, red, and cream. It is extremely rare to find such a rug in this size in a Farahan rug from the mid-1800s. The oldest known carpet was found in southern Siberia. (It may have traveled there from Persepolis in Iran.) For the flat-weave floor rugs crafted by Native Americans, cotton was the primary material before sheep’s wool was introduced in the 16th century. In Europe, carpet-making was fundamental to folk art, and Asian carpets imported to European countries were at one time considered a precious luxury and not intended to remain permanently on the floor.
