This artwork titled "Sea Spirit" 1965 is an original stonecut on thin paper by Eskimo artist Egevadluq (Eegyvudluk) Ragee, 1920-1983. It is hand signed, titled, dated, described and numbered 20/50 in pencil by the artist. With the blind stamp of the artist at the lower right corner. It is in excellent condition. it has a minor thin crease at the middle center, at the edge of the sheet, barely visible, see picture #4 About the artist: Eegyvudluk Ragee was the oldest child born to Pamiaktok and Sorisolutu at the small campsite of Ikarasak, on the southern tip of Baffin Island in 1920. When Egevadluq travelled to Cape Dorset (Kinngait) to trade for supplies, she would buy graphite pencil and paper from the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative. Her early works filled entire sheets of paper, mythical creatures, bird-animal-human transformations, and images from reality - all randomly intermingled . By the mid-1960s, Eegyvudluk was using wax crayons, or coloured felt pens on paper. In 1967, improved housing in Cape Dorset resulted in the Inuit abandoning most of the campsites. Eegyvudluk moved into the settlement, and by the early 1970s, explored the use of arcrylic washes, on which she drew her well-known figures and birds. "I started drawing because I was 'tususkuk' (when I saw other people doing it, I wanted to do the same things)...When I start to make a drawing, I have a picture in my mind, but when I try to put that picture on paper, my hands won't do what my mind wants. When I have the picture in my head, I can't get it out by my hands. Sometimes I find it hard to draw when my children are in the house; I find it hard to think with so much noise around me. This is Jupiter 4. I have others from the series, also for sale. The print has never been framed and is in excellent condition. It measures 22.5" x 28.5". Rafael Bogarin is an established contemporary Venezuelan artist known for his abstract serigraphs. Bogarin was born in 1946, in El Tigre, where he grew up making his own toys and learning to draw. He studied in Caracas at the Cristobal Rojas School of Fine Arts, specializing in lithography and etching. From 1970 to 1992, Bogarin, like so many artists, lived in New York. As he explored various techniques, he became an expert in serigraphs, earning himself acclaim in Latin America as a pioneer. In South America he traveled the continent giving classes and learning about native cultures. When he returned to the land of his youth, he was inspired to create the concept of the entire world in the Museo Vial in El Tigre in 1982. Later he made others along the route between Colombia and Venezuela. Recently he has been creating and realizing ideas like the Museo de Murales a Cielo Abierto (Museum of Murals to the Open Sky). Detailed biographical information (source: artist's website): Rafael Bogarín was born in El Tigre, Anzoátegui state, Venezuela, on January 20, 1946. He studied at the Cristóbal Rojas School, which he finished in 1966; Among his teachers are Luis Guevara Moreno, Pedro León Zapata, Luisa Palacios and Luis Chacón. Upon returning from school he founded the Zapato Roto group with other artists, with the aim of taking art to the streets. In 1966 he directed the outdoor exhibitions of the Venezuelan American Center, and two years later he participated in the XXVIII Official Salon, where he received the Rome Prize. During that time he ordered elements such as nuts and serrated blades in relation to discs engraved with burin and other techniques, and made the final impression in planes of one color. In 1970 he received a scholarship and traveled to New York; He studies at the Pratt Graphic Center and the Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. This is a 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Dendrortyx Leucophrys" (White Eye-browed Partridges) by John Gould, published in his monograph 'A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America' in London between 1844-1850. Reportedly only 250 copies were printed. The print depicts two partridges, one standing and the other lying apparently on sand, surrounded by high grass. A landscape of plants and possibly water is seen in the background. This beautiful hand-colored lithograph is presented in a double cream-colored mat. There is one tiny spot in the left lower corner, faint spots in the right upper print and mild toning about the periphery which is covered by the mat. It is otherwise in excellent condition. It is accompanied by the original text page. John Gould (1841-1881) was an English contemporary of the American John James Audubon. Gould published his first illustrated book on birds in 1831 entitled "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains", followed by "Ramphastidae" and "Birds of Europe". He then extended the scope of his travels and research to include Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea, drawing birds in their natural habitat. Artists, such as his wife Elizabeth Gould, Henry Richter and Edward Lear, transferred his drawings to hand printed and hand colored stone lithographs, which are known for their beauty, detail and accuracy. About the artist: Romain Erte was born Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Russia. The only son of an admiral in the Imperial Fleet, he was raised amidst Russia's social elite. As a young boy, he was fascinated by the Persian miniatures he found in his father's library. These exotic, brightly patterned designs continued to be important to him and influenced the development of his style. He moved to Paris at the age of eighteen and took the name Erte, from the French pronunciation of his initials, R and T. In 1915 he began his long relationship with Harper's Bazaar, during which time he created over 240 covers for the magazine. His fashion designs also appeared in many other publications, making him one of the most widely recognized artists of the 1920s. He also designed costumes and sets for the theater. In 1976 the French government awarded Erte the title of Officer of Arts and Letters, and in 1982 the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris was bestowed upon him. His work is in many prominent museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The designs created by Erté during his long and illustrious life influenced not only the world of theatre, film and fashion, but an entire art movement as well. The genius of the artist is evidenced by an enormous body of work that is considered among the most influential and unique of the 20th century. Erté—Romain de Tirtoff—was born in Russia in 1892, and died at age 97 in 1990. His legendary career spanned nearly the entire length of his life. In 1912, Erté moved to Paris and his unique talent was immediately recognized by the city's most established couturiers. In 1915, he began an association with Harper's Bazaar by designing covers of each of their magazines for the next 22 years.
