Vintage Native American Navajo rug in a Storm Warrior pattern in gray, Ivory, red, and black handwoven in the SW United States. Circa the 1920-1930. This rug has a very unique and wonderful color combination including gray, black and ivory. The rug is very finely woven. Overall it is an outstanding example of fine Navajo weaving art from one of the most renowned Navajo weaving families. Navajo rugs are generally flat woven with wool for the body of the rug and usually cotton foundation. Navajo weavers usually try to use natural organic dyes that are available around their tribal land. The Navajo rugs have geometric designs and the design and symbols have religious and cultural meanings. The Tabriz from a fine workshop has a central medallion in a floral pattern in salmon, green, blue, and red colors. The corner spandrels are green and gray with a floral design. The Tabriz rug has a wool pile on a cotton foundation with silk highlighting of the flowers throughout which shimmers under the right light. The ends have been finished in a kilim (flatweave) with the signature of the workshop. The rug is in a new excellent condition. A very rare Persian sofreh tribal Kilim from the mid 1900s. The handwoven tribal kilim is from the Qashqai tribes in Southwest Persia. It is a very desirable square-size tribal kilim with natural organic dyes. The sofreh kilim was mostly woven by the tribes for their own use and therefore the number of such items is extremely limited. It would be used mainly at mealtime to put the serving dishes on them and the folks would sit around it. It would not be walked on and therefore it would stay clean and in good condition for an extended period. It is a beautiful piece of functional tribal weaving and is in wonderful condition.
