Early 20th Century hand hooked rug in a wonderful bird and flowers design in earth tone color pattern. The rug has one of the most delightful designs we have seen in vintage American hand hooked rugs. We are intrigued with the novelty and the imagination of the maker in creating such a wonderful and rare design in earth tone colors including tan, green, yellow and brown. The colors on the top part have faded because of over 100 years of exposure to light but the original colors are shown in the back. The piece would be a wonderful wall art displayed either on the front or the back.
The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique. The Khorassan rug has a beautiful design consisting of scrolls filled with colorful flowers that cover the dark blue color field. The scrolls are like branches with flowers hanging from the scrolls. The use of bright colors of turquoise, red, blue, green, yellow, and ivory adds to the beauty and the cheerful nature of the rug. The border of the rug has the design of large flower bouquets combining the unique design and color scheme.

The so-called “Manchester" name comes from the Merino sheep wool that was imported to Persia from Manchester England to weave this carpet. The wool was dyed locally with the vegetable dyes and the ancient wool dyeing techniques of Persian weavers. The wool is extremely soft and has a lustrous luxury and richness which shows in the rug. The "Manchester Kashan" rugs are renowned worldwide for their beauty because of their brilliant design and the high quality of the wool used in weaving the carpet.

A wonderful 19th century Persian Farahan in an all-over Herati pattern in an oversized or “mansion size” in navy blue, green, blue, pale yellow. This extremely finely hand woven Farahan rug from Western Persia has a “Herati” all-over pattern set in a navy blue color field with designs in brick red, ivory. The colors on the border include blue, green, yellow, pink, red, and cream. It is extremely rare to find such a rug in this size in a Farahan rug from the mid-1800s. Although the rug has a very short pile and is worn in some areas, the beauty of the design and fine colors are clearly visible.
