Vintage Turkmen Yomut Soumak rug from Central Asia circa the mid 1900s. The soumak tapestry-woven has a wool foundation, a wool pile and is in an all-over design which results in a beautifully created tribal rug. The main field color in this Yomut Soumak is a rich red with geometric designs in dark blue and cream colors.
Soumak (also spelled Soumakh, Sumak, Sumac, or Soumac) is a tapestry technique of weaving strong and decorative textiles used as rugs and domestic bags. Bags used for carrying the bedding are known as Soumak Mafrash. Soumak is a type of flat weave, somewhat resembling but more robust and thicker than kilim, with a smooth front face and a ragged back, whereas kilim is soft on both sides. Soumak lacks the slits characteristic of kilim, as it is usually woven with supplementary weft threads as continuous supports. The technique involves wrapping colored weft threads over and under the warp threads, adding strength and an embroidery-like pattern.

The Turkmen Ersari rug has a rich and vibrant red color field with design accents in green and navy blue/black colors. The rug has a primary border in red with geometric designs in green and red colors. The secondary borders are in abrash green and navy blue/black colors.

This Baluch area rug has an allover design consisting of geometric forms in dark red, navy blue, and camelhair framed by four different borders make for a very subtle tribal rug. A 19th century Persian Baluch tribal soumak double saddlebag. The front of the bag has a beautiful geometric design in a green/blue color set on a yellow background. The variation in color in the green/blue design is very beautiful. The Baluch double saddlebags have a flatwoven kilim in a rich brown and rust red color.
This complete saddlebag is also known as “khorjin” in Persian, or a double bag set. These bags are renowned for their beautiful colors and design which is the result of using fine wool for both pile and the foundation of the rugs and the use of organic vegetable dyes. One usually sees only one of the panels but this piece has both side panels and the banded design kilim which forms the back of the bag. The saddlebags were used by tribes to move their household items from one location to another from their seasonal moves.
