In which century did Realism develop in Manila?
1 Answer

Realism developed in Manila during the late 20th century. Filipino artists working in the 1970s and ’80s began producing works with elements of Social Realism to comment on the social and economic conditions that resulted from the martial rule of the Marcos regime. One of the leading figures of the movement was Nestor Garcia Leynes, Sr, a painter who brought awareness to the plight of rural Filipinos through his works depicting mothers and children.
