After studying at the Art Students League and graduating from Brooklyn College, he moved west at the age of 26, and is credited with introducing an East Coast sensibility to marketing. He saw advertising as a means for funding his passion for the movies, and after 6 years working with a number of agencies, he finally had the funds to establish his own. All this time, he was forging ever-closer links with the film industry, and in 1954 this led to a commission from Otto Preminger to design the poster for Carmen Jones.
