Why is it called a chair rail?

1 Answer
Why is it called a chair rail?
Why it is called a chair rail relates to the original function of the trim. Prior to the introduction of drywall in the 20th century, walls were typically made of plaster, which was prone to cracking. The fragility of plaster was especially problematic in small dining rooms, as chairs being pulled and pushed out around dining tables often resulted in damage. Installing molding at the level of chair backs was the 19th-century solution to the problem. Since the molding resembled a rail that traveled around the room and protected wall surfaces from chairs, the name chair rail emerged. Explore a wide range of dining chairs on 1stDibs.
