The term Impressionism comes from the title of Claude Monet’s painting Impression, Sunrise, from which an art critic derived what he considered an insulting name for the entire movement.

It is called Impressionism because this type of art aims to capture a reflection, or impressionism of real life. Impressionism depicts a visual impression of a moment, paying particular attention to the shifting effect of light and color.
