About the Item

This artwork by Peter Monaghan is an example of his rich talent in creating dynamic multimedia artworks which speak to his rich history in graphic design. Infinity is a bright, happy artwork which refers to the everlasting connection we have to our home country. The circle is a Celtic loop which references Ireland. The golden circles represent the richness of life and being present in the moment. Biography: Award winning artist Peter Monaghan was born in Ireland in 1955 and studied at the National College of Art and Design in the mid 1970s. Monaghan then joined Dara O’Lochlainn’s pioneering graphic design firm, with his work winning a number of prestigious awards including several sponsored by the Institute of Creative Advertising and Design, the IDI, and the European Design Annual. In 1983 he set up his own graphic design firm called Monaghan Design, later becoming a partner in Creative Inputs; working with such clients as AIB, ESB, Jefferson Smurfit, and the Office of Public Works. Monaghan also designed a number of works for the National Gallery and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. In 2000, he gave up design work to concentrate full-time on painting and sculpture; “My work is the result of a disciplined research into the experience of looking – the experience of pure visual sensation and aesthetic pleasure. Simple forms and colours are used in repetition to engage the viewer. It is a dialogue about light, colour, movement and illusion; exploring the relationships and contrasts between painted flat surfaces, protruding spheres, cubes or geometric shapes. The work aims to evoke a response from the viewer". - Peter Monaghan Monaghan's artwork has won national recognition including the Jim McNaughton Bursary for Commissioned Artists as part of the National Allianz Business to Arts Awards. His large-scale installations can be seen in prestigious locations such as the V.I.P. Presidential Suite in Dublin Airport, the Gibson Hotel, the Dean Hotel, the Beacon Clinic, and University College Dublin’s recent scientific centre. Monaghan has also exhibited at the RHA in Dublin and had successful exhibitions in London, New York, Miami, Singapore, Brussels, and Hong Kong.

Joy Filled

The Heart of the Matter – Metal Wall Sculptures Artist Statement by Tom Hoitsma: In October 2019 my family learned first-hand a brutal lesson about the climate crisis. Dallas used to see one tornado each year. For the last few years that number had tripled and the intensity of the tornados has increased. On October 20, 2019 one of these super tornados ripped through our Dallas neighborhood. With winds up to 140 miles per hour and three quarters of a mile wide, this tornado literally came right down our street. By some act of God, the tornado jumped over the first 5 houses on the west end of our street (including my house), which I was in at the time with my kids, but destroyed most of the homes just west of us. We have all seen images of this kind of destruction on television but to walk the neighborhood the next morning, and see the destruction with my own eyes was completely surreal and deeply disturbing. As usual, my eye kept settling on the sculptural beauty in some of the wreckage, especial the twisted metal. I collected some of these broken and bent objects and brought them to my studio to contemplate. On our walk the morning after the tornado, my 12 year old daughter and I bumped into a couple standing in front of their home. It was destroyed. The roof was gone, a few interior walls were standing but most of the exterior walls were just piles of brick. The couple pointed to an interior white door that was still standing (the exterior walls to that room were gone) and said, “do you see that white door? We were all huddle behind that door when the tornado ripped the roof off the house. The air was thick with debris flying around and we all just clutched each other until it finally passed. In front of that door used to be our bedroom (there were no walls standing). We’re so grateful that the four of us made it out without a scratch.” And that made me think. People are so resilient. Events in our lives can break our hearts but somehow we cannot be defeated. Like these sculptures, our hearts get tangled, bruised and battered but still remain full of hope and joy. We all emerge, changed from experiences but eventually, hopeful for the future. It became clear that this twisted metal was the perfect metaphor. To take this material which had been so tortured by this tornado and create something vibrant and beautiful. This work, born of the tragedy created by the climate crisis and super storms, is an examination of the impact of the “new normal...

Untitled Photo collage, c. 2005 Unsigned Provenance: Estate of the Artist Condition: Excellent Image size: 15 1/4 x 19 1/2 inches Sheet size: 19 1/4 x 24 1/4 inches Peter Marks (1935 -2010) Peter Marks was born in New York City on January 18, 1935. A lifetime New Yorker, Marks graduated from the High School of Music and Art in 1952 and Amherst College in 1956. After a brief stint as a graphic designer in publishing, Marks became a private art dealer and opened his gallery Peter Marks Works of Art, Inc. in 1960. During this time he specialized in the sale of Southeast Asian and Islamic antiquities and made many contributions to the field both as a dealer and an advocate of his profession. Above all, Marks was motivated by a strong desire to find great art and make it available to large audiences. After retiring from art dealing in 2002, Marks transformed his Manhattan gallery space into a studio where he drew prolifically and painted large non-objective canvasses. This time in his studio was a happy one for Marks, who viewed this period of his life not as retirement, but rather fulfillment, a fact that is confirmed by passionate artistic output in the years leading up to his passing in 2010. In 2012, Thomas French...
