One natural resource found in Rusk County provided an abundance of raw material for the development of industry in the county. When pioneers arrived in Rusk County in the early 1800's, they found a variety of clays suitable for brick making, tiles, statuary and pottery. Pottery making is one of the world's oldest crafts, with examples of pottery traced back as far as the 7th century BC. Amongst the earliest finds are artistic figures, images of people and animals, and household implements including breakers and dishes. Anthropologists often use the techniques and patterns found in ancient burial sites to form an accurate picture of society through the ages. Earthenware (jugs, churns, and vessels of all kinds) made in Rusk County found a ready market. Some of the early potters were Brown, Leopard, Rushton, Prothro and Russell. Many of Henderson's downtown buildings were made from bricks baked in the kiln of the Howard Brothers...

These wax relief portraits of two women, possibly the same woman dated two years apart, is a work that is exemplary of one of the 19th century's masters of the craft, Richard Cockle Lucas. Lucas was known for doing the wax relief portraits of both well-known figures in British society such as the Prime Minister Lord Palmerston and figures of the local churches near and in his local hometown of Chilworth, such as the Bishop of St David's, Thomas Burgess. Each wax profile measures approx. 6 inches tall x 3 inches wide carved in the color off white wax with the name of the sitter and dates on both signed into the brown wax back ground. One is signed Miss Crawford Walton 1851 and one is signed Miss Crawford 1853, both have the signature of Richard Cockle Lucas along side of the sitters name. Lireux began, out of college, by founding, in his hometown, a small newspaper, the Indiscret , whose sarcastic and biting tone made him many enemies and which earned him seven or eight duels, where he has almost always been injured. There he recounted the marital misadventures of his compatriots, a process which provided him with a great deal of copy, but which he had to put an end to when a chair-mender outraged in his reputation had not inflicted on him a correction which could have had very serious consequences if the painter Garneray had not come to his aid. Discouraged, in 1841 he went to Paris, where he founded La Patrie which was then regarded as an opposition newspaper. He entered several other newspapers, including the Revue et gazette des théâtres , which then had among its editors Édouard Thierry , the administrator of the Théâtre-Français, the Courrier français (1846), the Revue comique (1848), the Messenger from theaters...
