Thuillier, R.E., Surveyor General of India, October 1890. A comprehensive railway map of British India, including the subcontinent and Burma, also displaying the main road networks, navigable canals, steamship routes, and telegraph connections across the peninsular. This publication by the Survey of India Office includes a useful ‘References’ key giving information on the differing gauges in use across the region, and a colour code highlighting the lands under direct British administration in pink, ‘Tributary States’ in yellow and ‘Independent & Foreign Possessions’ in Green. A notice records the price for colour as ‘Five Rupees’, as against ‘Four Rupees’ without. Prepared under the direction of Colonel Henry Ravenshaw Thuillier, who as his father before him, served as Surveyor General of India from 1887 to 1895. Here Baluchistan is shown as an enclave of the British Raj. This strategically important territory lies in modern-day Pakistan, and is situated around the natural fort town of Quetta located high in the Chiltan mountains. Brown patinated bronze with rectangular cast plinth on a green marble base (3 cm high), total height with hinge 37 cm, width 9 cm, depth 8 cm, weight 2.9 kg, signed “Lavergne” on the plinth. - Base with old drilling and a few oxidized areas, patina occasionally rubbed, somewhat stained in the folds. - Full of anticipation - This bronze is the larger, highly detailed version of the fisherman that made Parisian artist Adolphe Jean Lavergne famous. In preparation for fishing, the boy prepares his rod before heading out to sea. The attachment of the iron ring and the rope behind him suggest a quay wall and a boat moored there. However, the depiction is entirely focused on the actual action of the young fisherman: With equal skill and concentration, he bends a hook to connect it to the fishing line. The contrast with his casual clothing, the loose-fitting trousers, the open shirt with its "wild" folds, and, last but not least, the sun hat boldly perched on his neck, reinforces the impression of the attentive care with which he goes about his work. His gaze makes him appear absorbed, as if he has forgotten the world around him and yet he is visibly filled with anticipation of fishing. Cuthbert "CB" Bradley for Vanity Fair Magazine "A Judge" - The Rev Cecil Legard 11 July 1901 Lithograph 21 x 37 cm CB's cartoon depicts The Rev Cecil Legard (1843-1918), the Rector of Cottesbrooke and heir to the baronetcy. As well as a clergyman, Legard was a noted sportsman and hound expert; he was a steeplechase rider, and also edited the Foxhound Kennel Stud Book. CB depicts him judging hounds, excellently outfitted; as the biography on the reverse of the mounted lithograph notes, he might be 'the best judge of a foxhound in England'. A copy of the cartoon is held by the Kingston Lacy Estate in Dorset. Cuthbert Bradley was also a sporting man - he famously authored 'Fox-Hunting from Shire to Shire with Many Noted Packs' and worked as a sporting journalist for The Field. As well as illustrating for Vanity Fair, he painted polo and foxhunting scenes, and other pictures of equestrian interest. The majority of his Vanity Fair cartoons are of hunting men.
