About the Item

Martin Mull is an actor, musician, and artist whose visual work is noted for its combination of Pop Art and collage. Born on August 18, 1943 in Chicago, IL, Mull earned his BFA and MFA from the Rhode Island School of Art and Design. He initially made his living by acting and performing, with notable roles in Taxi, Marry Hartman Marry Hartman, Roseanne, as well as multiple feature films roles. His artwork was included in the legendary Boston Museum exhibition “Flush With the Walls,” an independent show mounted in protest within the men’s bathroom to decry the museum’s lack of contemporary art. His work is characterized by playful, situational imagery, such as Arrested Development (2014), a Photo-realistic painted collage where a tug-o-war team pulls on a train together. His art has drawn comparisons to David Salle, Eric Fischl, and James Rosenquist, and has been used by writer Joyce Carol Oates and comedian Steve Martin, for the covers of their book and album, respectively.
