About the artist:
Karl A. McIntosh is a self taught artist who works is pastel, watercolor, acrylic, stone, wood and metal and is a known for his imaginative transformation of found objects into works of art. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, McIntosh moved to the United States at an early age and later took up art. Among his mentors are artist Otto Neals with whom he worked at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Working Workshop and artist Marian Griffin. McIntosh is also a poet, drummer and dancer who draws his creative inspiration and expression from his study of African art and culture.
McIntosh’s bold, bright colors dance off the page and tantalize the senses. His work is profound in its statement and deliciously whimsical. His work is an honest portrayal of everyday life and the people who live it but on occasion, takes on public figures and world events most often employing satire as thick as the layers of paint or paper he uses to depict them.

This retablo was purchased by the gallery in Mexico City. I knew the family that sold the retablo to me. It is dated 1853 because the story on the retablo was passed down for generations and a relative of Lourdes painted it in her memory.
The description on the ex-voto reads:
"Thanks to the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos that I have a new job with my new bosses. That they like my food and they don't mind what I prepare for them. "
It is in excellent condition. It is framed behind conservatorship glass. The framed size is 14" x 15". The class should only be cleaned with ammonia free cleaner.
An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or to a divinity; the term is usually restricted to Christian examples. It is given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshiper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. The destinations of pilgrimages often include shrines decorated with ex-votos.
Ex-votos can take a wide variety of forms. They are not only intended for the helping figure, but also as a testimony to later visitors of the received help. As such they may include texts explaining a miracle attributed to the helper, or symbols such as a painted or modeled reproduction of a miraculously healed body part, or a directly related item such as a crutch given by a person formerly lame. There are places where a very old tradition of depositing ex-votos existed, such as Abydos in ancient Egypt.

"Just off Brady Street, in Milwaukee’s East Side, there used to be a place with class and style," says artist Leroy Burt. The store was a treasure trove of vintage goodies that were as fun to dig through as to wear. The shop was full of clothing, shoes, jewelry, and bags, some dating back to the golden days of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The ceiling was pink and covered with toys, trinkets, signs, and other captivating eye candy.
About the Artist
Artist Leroy Burt paints playful, offbeat landscapes and portraits based on his experiences living in Milwaukee, New York, Costa Rica, and currently Rochester, Minnesota. "I think of my paintings as short stories," he says. As a young child, Leroy faced a number of obstacles. His parents divorced when he was four years old and he was raised by his grandparents in a three-room shack without running water or electricity. Leroy worked hard to pull himself out of poverty. He studied graphic design and painting, which led to a 30-year career in graphic design - five years at WMVS, the PBS television station in Milwaukee, fifteen years at city hall in Milwaukee, and ten years at WNET, the PBS station in New York. In 2015, Leroy retired to focus his energy on painting. Today, he works from a tiny studio filled with half-finished paintings stacked against every wall. "There are photos and sketches for future paintings taped everywhere," says Leroy. "My windows are filled with orchids. There are books, films and music CDs in every corner. STATEMENT
I've been drawn by the magical beauty behind fine arts and design since childhood.
Having a successful carrier in architecture and design for quite a long time, I began to
deal with fine art.
I began to look for new ways to express my emotions and feelings. The process of
creating art gave me what I wanted - endless ways of expressing myself. During the
creating process, I don't limit myself to a specific style or medium therefore my art is
mostly represents mixed media. My creating process is based on my emotions and my
mood. I'm very spontaneous. Today I might use photography to convey my
feelings...tomorrow I might paint to express myself. My work is infused with spirit and
energy I felt at the moment I created it. It encourages viewers to interpret it their own
way. My art evokes different feelings in the audience depending on their individual
experiences and memories. I was and continue to be inspired by the beauty of the world
around me and can spent hours to explore it. The rapid world at which is everything
changed so fast, I discovered that I will never live in quite the same world. Life unfolds
only in moments. Capturing moments that are full of emotion is the key to my art.
