Robert Brooks (American, 1922-1992) Portait of a Startled Woman Monumental oil on canvas Signed lower right 80 x 42 inches Born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1922, Robert Brooks embarked on his art career by winning modeling clay as a reward for good attendance at primary school. He became known for embellishing the margins of his school books with sketches of his friends and maybe teachers. He operated his own sign making business as a teenager, which supplied little money but lots of experience. Brooks also entered every poster and drawing competition in sight. Saturday morning classes at the Swain School of Design provided him with sound instructions in the principles of art, and as a high school senior in 1941, Brooks was awarded a scholarship to Boston's Vesper George School of art in a annual state-wide competition. During this year in Boston, he specialized in design, color and the theater arts and discovered "watercolor" as his favorite medium. At the end of his year Brooks was awarded a scholarship to continue by the Vesper George School but returned to New Bedford before the second year was out in order to work in the design department of a large textile printing concern. He was called to serve his country and after basic training, casual detachments and port of embarkation, he made his own private beachhead on New Caledonia in 1943, where he served as staff artist for The South Pacific Daily News. Brooks painted sketches and watercolors of the local scene during his daytime off-duty hours and won fast acclaim for his crisp, clean paintings...

Damsel

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

"Damsel" is a work of art that immediately draws the viewer's attention to the glorious charm of the woman at its center. Adewale's portrayal of her low-cut hairstyle is a powerful statement that challenges conventional norms of beauty. With her hair styled so boldly, the subject exudes a sense of self-assuredness, breaking free from societal expectations and embracing her uniqueness. The woman's choice of a vibrant yellow dress further reinforces the celebration of feminine allure. Yellow, a color often associated with happiness and positivity, complements the woman's radiance, illuminating the canvas with her inner glow. This striking hue symbolizes her inner strength and vibrant spirit, echoing the confidence and dynamism that emanate from her presence. The blue background, in contrast, serves as a calming and harmonious setting, providing a perfect backdrop for the woman's portrayal. The serene blue not only accentuates her poise and elegance but also serves as a reflection of her depth and wisdom. It suggests that beneath her external charm lies a profound reservoir of inner grace and strength, making her all the more captivating and multidimensional as a subject. "Damsel" is more than just a beautiful portrait; it is a celebration of the richness and diversity of womanhood. Adewale's brushwork masterfully captures the subtle details of her facial features, highlighting the delicate contours of her lips and the gentle curves of her cheekbones. The artist's attention to detail emphasizes the individuality and uniqueness of the subject, celebrating the fact that each woman possesses her own distinct brand of charm and beauty. This artwork is not merely a passive representation but a self-conscious portraiture that actively engages the viewer. As we gaze upon the woman in "Damsel," we become participants in this celebration of femininity. Adewale invites us to appreciate and honor the beauty that exists within all women, encouraging us to recognize and celebrate the allure that each woman carries in her own unique way. In its essence, "Damsel" is a testament to the empowering nature of art. It breaks away from conventional stereotypes and standard definitions of beauty, presenting a woman who embraces her identity unapologetically. The artwork's appeal lies not only in its visual aesthetics but also in the powerful message it conveys to society, urging us to appreciate and cherish the diverse expressions of feminine charm. In conclusion, "Damsel" by Busari Adewale...

Journey of Love

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

The central theme of "Journey of Love" revolves around the feeling of uncertainty that often accompanies the onset of a romantic relationship between two young people. As we gaze at the artwork, we witness the subtle apprehension in their eyes and body language, hinting at the initial hesitancy that comes with opening one's heart to another. Adewale beautifully captures the vulnerability of these young souls, making it evident that they are navigating uncharted waters, unsure of what the future may hold for their budding connection. The woman, almost positioned in front of the young man, symbolizes her subtle dominance in the relationship. This arrangement not only suggests her strength and independence but also highlights the significance of women in guiding the course of love. The painting subtly challenges traditional gender norms, emphasizing the equal partnership and influence both individuals have in shaping their shared journey. Moreover, "Journey of Love" doesn't shy away from portraying the doubts and fears that can plague the minds of those in the early stages of a relationship. The artist masterfully captures the subtle tension in their clasped hands, portraying the emotional tightrope that they walk together. This poignant aspect of the artwork resonates deeply with viewers who have experienced the vulnerability and anxiety that come hand in hand with falling in love. However, amidst the uncertainty and challenges depicted, Adewale's artwork also showcases the hope that drives these young hearts forward. In the gentle smiles and the glimmer of optimism in their eyes, we see the belief in the magic of love, the idea that their journey will be one of shared joy and personal growth. It is precisely this hope that allows them to face the challenges head-on and continue on their path despite the unknown future. The journey of love, as depicted in the artwork, is not without its trials and tribulations. Adewale subtly incorporates various elements in the background, such as swirling winds and turbulent skies, as metaphors for the external forces that may try to sway their commitment. The young couple's ability to withstand these challenges and remain standing together is a testament to the strength of their bond. As viewers immerse themselves in the layers of the "Journey of Love," they cannot help but reflect on their own experiences with love and relationships. The artwork becomes a mirror that allows them to ponder the uncertainties they have faced, the doubts they have battled, and the triumphant moments that have shaped their romantic endeavors. In conclusion, "Journey of Love" by Busari Adewale...

"On the Rock” Landscape Oil Painting 12" x 12" inch by Katherine Bakhoum Tisné

By Katherine Bakhoum-Tisné

Located in Culver City, CA

"On the Rock” Landscape Oil Painting 12" x 12" inch by Katherine Bakhoum Tisné Katherine Bakhoum represents art that has been forgotten for a long while. She draws upon the concept and the subject of the orientalism and the enchantment of that period. Through her work we can feel the researches she has done to reveal her Egyptian origins and the magic and power of the bygone times. Katherine Bakhoum has succeeded in imprinting her own stamp to evoke a new world full of charm, nostalgia and magic that is deeply implanted in her canvas. Her power dwells in creating her own style of contemporary expressionism building upon the old orientalism. Katherine Bakhoum’s art comes up out of an Egyptian childhood and from the distance of a life spent in France. What is left unsaid is as important as what is shown. Decorative yes, as in old orientalism, when everything was texture and what wasn’t texture was veiled, a reincarnation of old spirits, dervishes, orientalist motifs and the stuff of a once powerful civilization, the better to suggest it all might just come to life again. The choice of ancient subject matters, the echo of orientalist pieces in the collages, like the echo of the appeal of ancient gestures, of foreign lands, and domestic tapestries, all this weaves up out of Katherine Bakhoum’s creations. Sometimes we only have the line of a horizon on which to hang our imagination, sometimes we only have the trace of a profile in the shadows. What we always have is a persistent belief in beauty. Where there is beauty, there is hope. Katherine Bakhoum has abandoned neither. SOLO EXHIBITIONS Claudine Legrand Gallery: Annual exhibitions from 1996 to 2016 Safar Khan...

Thinking Eakins: Figure with Thomas Eakins Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum

By Judith Wyer

Located in Hudson, NY

Figurative painting of a male figure viewing paintings by Thomas Eakins at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City "Thinking Eakins" painted by Judith Wyer, in 2020 oil on linen 18 x 14 inches unframed, 19 x 15 inches with white stained wood frame Artist signature, verso This figurative painting was made by Connecticut based artist, Judith Wyer, in 2020. The painting features a mysterious male figure looking intently at "The Thinker", a portrait of Louis N. Kenton, by Thomas Kenton. The figure in the painting stares at the viewer, as if in dialogue. Curiously, they are dressed in the same outfit and captured in a similar stance. Another famous Eakins portrait entitled "Artist's Wife and His Setter Dog", seen in the background, lends further intrigue to this peculiar painting. Artist Statement: Making a painting is a journey with an unknown destination.. In this respect, I consider my process much like a writer where the narrative seems to develop itself. The relationship of the word and the image is crucial. My work often begins with a photograph of a captivating image, a fleeting moment of everyday existence. From this I begin the process of developing the narrative which most often requires numerous edits and lengthy periods of just looking at the work and not touching it. This can take years. The work and I grow together which hopefully yields a provocative and intimate elucidation of the human condition. Once I arrive on a title, which is almost never at the outset, everything comes into sharper focus and the work's form and meaning come into closer agreement. . In fact, I never consider a piece finished. The challenge of one piece informs the next which sometimes leads to resurrecting an incomplete piece from the past. My attic is full of such unfinished works. The words of Diego Velazquez continue to guide me, "Es Verdad, No Pintura." Artist Resume: Judith Wyer is an artist based in Connecticut. Education Master of Fine Arts, Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, New York, 1994 Arts Student League, New York, New York, 1990-92 Private studies with Robert Kulicke, New York, New York, 1991 Intermittent Studies, National Academy of Design, School of Visual Arts, Art Students League, New York, New York, 1975-1990 Bachelor of Arts, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, 1975 Selected One Person Shows Recent Work, Hotchkiss Library, Sharon, Connecticut, 2019 “Presence,” Art Wall David Hunt Library, Falls Village, Connecticut, 2018 Winner’s Exhibition, Washington Art Association, Washington Connecticut, 2017 “The Art of the Bloom,” Minor Memorial Library Community Gallery, Roxbury, Connecticut, 2016 “Painting People,” Art Wall, David Hunt Library, Falls Village, Connecticut, 2015 “Getting There,” David Hunt Library Gallery, 2013 “Going Places,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2009 “Beyond Nature,” Bachelier Cardonsky, Kent, Connecticut, 2006 “Their Portraits and Their Works,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2003 “Humanity,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2002 “Life and Still Life,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2001 “Bravo,” Paris, New York, Kent Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 1999 “Underground, On the Ground, Above Ground,” Paris, New York, Kent Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 1998 “Visions,” Paris, New York, Kent Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 1996 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition, Chuck Levitan Gallery, New York, New York, 1995 “Classical Extremes,” Paris, New York, Kent Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 1995 Selected Group Shows “Seeing Red,” Meeting House Gallery, New Marboro, Massachusetts, 2019 “Girls”, Howland Cultural Center, Beacon, New York, 2018 “100!”, Howland Cultural Center, Beacon, New York, 2017 “Meeting Past,” Akin Library, Pawling, New York, 2016 “Meeting Past,” Akin Library, Pawling, New York, 2015 “Meeting Past,” Akin Library, Pawling, New York, 2014 “Just Drawing,” MidHudson Heritage Center, Poughkeepsie, New York, 2014 “On the Move,” Flinn Gallery, Greenwich, Connecticut, 2014 Invitational show, PUAB, Bethel, Connecticut, 2012 Invitational show, Front Street Gallery, Patterson, New York, 2012 “Still Life,” Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, New York, 2010 “Painted Cities,” Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, New York, 2010 “Closing Show,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2009 “Twentieth Year Anniversary,” Bachelier Cardonsky, Kent, Connecticut, 2008 “Memorial for Jacques,” Bachelier Cardonsky, Kent, Connecticut, 2008 “Small Works,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2007 “Diverging Similarities,” Chocolate Church Arts Center, Bath, Maine 2006 “Textural Rhythms,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2006 “Animals,” Paris, New York, Kent Gallery, Kent Connecticut, 2005 “Doors,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2005 “Small Works,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2004 “Bridge to the Country,” Kismet Gallery, New York, New York, 2003 “Chairs,” Paris, New York, Kent Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2003 “Still Life,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2002 “Urban Scenes,” Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, New York, 2001 “Works on Paper,” Exhibition Space 156, Brooklyn, New York, 2001 “Summer Show,” Holland Fine Arts, Nantucket, Massachusetts, 2001 “Small Works,” Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, New York, 2001 “Urban Imagery,” Bachelier Cardonsky, Kent, Connecticut, 2001 “The Painting in the Painting,” Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, Connecticut, 2000 Selected Juried Shows Blue Mountain Gallery, New York, N.Y., Martica Sawin, juror, 2020 Blue Mountain Gallery, New York, N.Y., Eric Aho...
