"In the late afternoon, just after the golden hour, the backlights are on as well as all the lights in my friend's house," explains artist Mitchell Freifeld. "They have even turned on the light in their excellent example of a classic mid-century kidney-shaped swimming pool, so that everything glows all shades of blue on this midsummer's eve."
About the Artist
Mitchell Freifeld cannot remember a time when he did not draw and paint. He won his first juried show at age 10 and decided that someday, he'd be a 'real painter.' He settled in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early '70s and got involved in the burgeoning tech industry. From there, he moved to Portland upon accepting an information technology position. This is a painting from my modernist pool series of paintings. In this particular painting I loved the shape of the kidney shaped pool and I placed the olive trees surrounding the architectural modern home in a group of three. Painting and landscaping the garden with cacti and hedges give the painting its unique colourful landscape. Contrasting the straight lines of the architecture to the soft lines of the plants and fauna give this painting an interesting focus.
Karen Lynn is available at Wychwood Art. Karen is an increasingly collectable figurative artist whose work is inspired by the glamour and appeal of the 40's, 50's and 60's; an era that Christian Dior described as the 'Golden Age' of fashion. Stylistically, Lynn's work has been compared to Hopper and Hockney. Initially training as a fashion designer, Lynn worked as a costumier for the English National Opera before successfully switching into set design, working for many years on a number of iconic feature films, before moving into television and commercials. In 2001, Lynn turned her attentions to painting in oils. Her wide experience of designing for film, television and theatre provides her with a unique and contemporary viewpoint; not surprisingly, her work has been snapped up by collectors both here and in the US. Lynn's detailed drawing is complemented by the use of bold strokes, often consisting of colourful and varied characters.

Hemera is an original painting by Amy Devlin. My process starts with taking the photographs I work from, I like to experiment with angles and light in the photographing. Every inch of the canvas has multiple layers on to build up the feeling of light, water and body, every layer focusing in on more detail until there is a balance of tight detail and watery fluidity. Every summer I do a number of photo shoots and then spend the rest of the year exploring them from different angles. "In keeping with the ethic of minimalism, I used the fewest elements possible to create a quiet mood somewhere in the middle of the last century," says artist Mitchell Freifeld. "While we see contrails all the time now, they were once something new heralding a bright tomorrow. At the same time, once only the very wealthy had private swimming pools in their backyards. But now they are as ubiquitous for the burgeoning middle-class as two cars in every garage."

His work focuses on architecture and cityscapes, and portrays everyday places that become lost to our curiosity through sheer familiarity.
