Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John

By Domenico Puligo

Located in New Orleans, LA

A masterful example of Italian Mannerist painting, this exceptional panel was composed by the renowned Florentine painter Domenico Puligo. Alongside Jacopo Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, Puligo is remembered as one of the foremost figures of the Mannerist movement that rose to prominence during the 16th century in Florence. This panel of the Virgin Mary with the Christ child and Saint John the Baptist is a characteristic example of his celebrated devotional images, which grace museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Museo del Prado (Madrid), Palazzo Borghese (Rome), and Palazzo Pitti (Florence), among many others. Puligo’s skill with color is fully demonstrated in the beautifully preserved work. Considering its age, the vibrancy and the sheer range of color is remarkable. The Virgin Mary’s crimson dress...

The Last Supper, circa 1500, Important Early Old Master Oil Painting

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

The Last Supper Workshop of Juan de Flandes (Netherlands, circa 1460-1519) oil on panel, framed framed size: 32 x 35 inches provenance: private collection, France Very rare early Old Master oil painting dating to circa 1500. The work can be attributed to the workshop of the important Netherlands born painter, Juan de Flandes (1460-1519). The painting beautifully captures the Biblical account referred to as "The Last Supper", where Christ and His disciplies are seated, on the night He was betrayed. Depicted with intricate detailing throughout, it is an exceptionally early work from this important period of Renaissance art. Juan de Flandes ("John of Flanders"; c. 1460 – by 1519) was an Early Netherlandish painter who was active in Spain from 1496 to 1519; his actual name is unknown, although an inscription Juan Astrat on the back of one work suggests a name such as "Jan van der Straat". Jan Sallaert, who became a master in Ghent in 1480, has also been suggested. He was born around 1460 in Flanders (modern Belgium). He evidently trained in his home country, most likely in Ghent, as his work shows similarities to that of Joos van Wassenhove, Hugo van der Goes...
