About the Item
Born in 1974 in Todi, Italy, Roberto Bernardi began painting at a very young age, with his first oil paintings dating back to the early 1980’s. His obsession with detail and traditional painting techniques influenced his artistic direction, working first as a restorer at the church of San Francesco a Ripa, to eventually devoting himself fulltime to the creation of his own works. Bernardi intitially painted landscapes and portraits, but soon after began moving towards a new form of realism, closely related to hyperrealism.
The turning point in his artistic style took place in the early 2000s with increasingly frequent trips to New York. In 2004 Bernardi moved to Manhattan for a short period and worked in a studio on 73rd street. During this time, his works were strongly influenced by the American culture.Over the last decade Bernardi's works have evolved further, with his hyperreal compositions being increasingly influenced by the Pop Art movement.
Since 2012, Bernardi has taken part in an international museum tour. The tour began at the Tübingen Museum in Germany and then continued in 13 other museums around the world, including the prestegious Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Spain) that in recent years has acquired two of the artist’s works – a painting and a sculpture.

My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces.
Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance.
My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry.
There is nothing “new...

I wait for spring to come when nature awakens about being filled with energy.
As soon as the snow melts and the sun is very hot, this is a short time when there is still no bright greenery, and the color in nature is very gentle.

Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting. After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain. Those were the difficult moments of the outbreak of the Civil War and thanks to the help of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he was able to complete his artistic training. Throughout his life Ignacio Gil dedicated himself to travel both in the Peninsula and in different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries.
