At the Petrol Station - Vintage Silver Salt Photograph by A. Rodcenko

At the Petrol Station - Vintage Silver Salt Photograph by A. Rodcenko

Located in Roma, IT

At the petrol station is an original vintage silver salts photograph, made by the great Russian Constructivist artist Aleksandr Michajlovic Rodčenko (Saint Petersburg, 1891 - Moscow, 1956) in 1935 ca. Printed later, presumably between the 1940s and the 1950s. In very good conditions, it is rare and precious. A scene of ordinary life is portrayed in an unusual point of view. The oblique cuts, the use of diagonal as the dynamics of this image, the close position of the machine are constants of Rodčenko'style and something of absolutely revolutionary and innovative at that time in the field of photography! Provenance: Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, Great Britain; Forum Auction, London; Private Collection. Bibliography: Alexander Rodchenko. Catalog of the retrospective exhibition published from the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1979. Aleksandr Michajlovič Rodčenko (St. Petersburg, 1891 - Moscow, 1956) Aleksandr Michajlovič Rodčenko was a Russian painter, photographer and graphic designer, a leading figure of the Russian avant-gardes who collaborated in the establishment of the Constructivist movement. In 1924 Rodcenko definitively abandoned painting as the main artistic medium to embrace photography...

Ted Higby at Skyline Rodeo, 1928 15 x 12 inch gelatin silver print Image Size: 14 x 8.5 inches Frame size: 22.5 x 17.5 x 2 inches Edition of 15 Lora Webb Nichols was born in 1883 and grew up in the small mining town of Encampment, Wyoming. At the age of 16 Lora received her first camera and from that moment and for the next few decades she produced work that is both stunning in its singular voice and revealing in the world it opens up for us. At first Nichols photographed her family, friends, and the landscape around Encampment, but when the town experienced a copper mining boom Nichols expanded her scope to become a photographer for hire shooting portraits and industrial photographs. When the boom collapsed, Nichols took the risk of opening her own business in Encampment - The Rocky Mountain Studio - which opened in 1925. The studio ran for ten years, accumulating 24,000 negatives that illustrate the lives and environment of the people living in and around the town while creating a distinctive and surprising body of work. If one was to attempt an analogy – Nichols’ pictures fit somewhere between Lartigue and Lange - joyful and generous while objectively intimate. In particular what seems to distinguish Nichols’ work is the way she sees the world from a female perspective. As Vince Aletti...

Robert Petersen (America, b. 1945), offset lithograph in black and silver, Gallery exhibition poster Provenance: Collection of Ileana Sonnabend Robert Petersen was born in 1945 in the small farm town of Le Mars, Iowa and was raised there until 1952 when he moved with his family to Whittier, California. His education as an artist began in 1963 at Fullerton Community College where his interest in architectural drafting led him to develop a passion for drawing, painting, and printmaking. In 1966, he pursued his love for printmaking further at California State University, Long Beach under the former Tamarind Lithography Workshop printer, Robert Evermon. In 1969, Petersen went on to work as an assistant printer at Gemini G.E.L. where he printed editions for Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. Most notably, Petersen served as one of the head printers for Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon series, during which the two formed a close friendship. In late 1970, Rauschenberg invited Petersen to live and work with him on Captiva Island, Florida, which had recently become the artist's permanent residence and studio. In 1971, Rauschenberg and Petersen established the experimental print shop, Untitled Press, Inc., where they not only printed their own work but also for visiting artists including David Bradshaw...
