About the Item

Simon Shepherd, Spalding, 2023 Ceramic and resin sculpture 50 x 35 x 30 cm (19.69 x 13.78 x 11.81 in) Edition of 3 + 1 Artist Proof This is the last work in the collection and is the Artist Proof (unsigned) Brighton-based sculptor Simon Shepherd finds the similarities between two seemingly different objects and brings them together to highlight their unexpected connection in appearance and often in essence. It’s the only thing that still makes sense these days, he believes, “in a world of confusion and contradiction”. Thus, he sheds light on new possible meanings, sharing a different side of the story everyone is either involved in, talking about or consuming as part of an unquestioned routine. Since winning the London, Cork Street Open in 2011, Simon Shepherd's career has gone from strength to strength, with both group and solo shows in the UK, USA and Canada. Shepherd is equally comfortable working in a range of materials including clay, steel and wood to produce a body of work which is truly unique. His work explores the relationship between the familiar and the unfamiliar, often focusing on objects of popular culture and the 'everyday'. Conceptually, themes range from satire to abstract explorations of space and form. Physically however, Shepherd attempts to deconstruct recognisable exteriors and re-imagines the rebuild with contrasting structural elements. James Higginson, Barberalla, 2024 Steel Set of three sculptures 28 (H) x 36 (w) cm 131 (H) x 22 (w) cm 84 (H) x 26 (w) cm Hand-signed by the artist James Higginson finds inspiration in mid-century design, organic materials, and photography, exploring the interplay of light, shadow, and color to shape atmosphere. Playfulness is central to his work, as he reimagines forms in new states to challenge their essence and invite discovery. His creative process balances planning and improvisation, where deliberate ideas and unexpected outcomes coexist. Cacti, especially the Saguaro, feature prominently in his work. Drawn to their resilience and mysticism, he celebrates their cultural and botanical significance, particularly their role in Native American traditions and their status as Arizona’s state flower. In the future, he hopes to create a platform for supporting and connecting emerging creatives, unlocking their potential through collaboration and mentorship.
