Sorel Etrog
The Couple Study

1965

About the Item

Sorel Etrog (1933 - 2014) is arguably Canada's most famous sculptor. Recognized as a trailblazer of public sculpture, Etrog's work is now enjoyed on iconic corners internationally in Toronto, Montreal, Israel, and beyond. The Art Gallery of Ontario organized a major retrospective of his work that ran in 2013. Etrog's work is defined by strong, evocative themes surrounding the human experience. Exploring paradoxical concepts such as the innate yearning for connection and inevitability of separation, Etrog investigates existential topics from an intrinsically poetic lens. "The Couple Study" is a paradigm of Etrog's practice from his breakout decade. Mysterious and sensual, Etrog's form synthesizes a myriad of influences; tribal art, religious statuary, and the rising force of Modernism. This work features two inextricable figures, their elongated silhouettes gracefully intertwined in a tender union. The smooth, symmetrical forms are affixed at the head, serving as an early example of Etrog's renowned "link" motif. The sculpture was created shortly after Etrog closed his studio in New York City and committed to developing his practice in Toronto. This was an incredibly fruitful period: within a period of fewer than five years, Etrog had solo exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Milan, Berlin, and Rome. "The Couple Study" is an important and accessible example of Etrog's early work in bronze. Etrog was elected a member of the Order of Canada in 1994 and two years later became a Chevalier of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. His work is celebrated internationally and can be found in numerous museum and private collections around the world including the Tate, the AGO, and LACMA.
