Izumi Kato Art

Japanese, b. 1969
Izumi Kato (b. 1969, Shimane Prefecture, Japan) is a contemporary artist known for his surreal and enigmatic paintings and sculptures. His work explores the intersection of the physical and spiritual realms, often depicting humanoid figures with exaggerated features that evoke a sense of primal existence. Kato studied oil painting at Musashino Art University, graduating in 1992. Unlike many artists, he took an unconventional path, working in manual labor before fully dedicating himself to art in his 30s. This background has influenced his approach, resulting in a raw and intuitive style. His paintings are often created without traditional brushes, as he applies pigment directly with his hands, enhancing the organic and instinctual nature of his figures. In addition to painting, Kato is renowned for his sculptures, which are crafted from wood, stone, and soft vinyl. These three-dimensional works bring his mysterious beings to life, blurring the lines between reality and myth. His art is deeply connected to Japanese folklore and spirituality, particularly drawing from the cultural heritage of his native Shimane, a region rich in Shinto traditions. Kato gained international recognition after participating in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. Since then, he has exhibited widely in major institutions and galleries across the world, and his works are held in esteemed public and private collections. He continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art while maintaining a deeply personal and instinctive creative process. Currently, he lives and works between Tokyo and Hong Kong, further expanding his artistic vision and global influence.

The Moon Crossing Bridge at Arashiyama in Yamashiro Province, Original Woodblock

Hiroshige’s first formal art teacher was Rinsai. Though Hiroshige tried to join Toyokuni Utagawa's studio, he was turned away. In 1811, young Hiroshige entered an apprenticeship with the celebrated Toyohiro Utagawa. After only a year, he was bestowed with the artist name Hiroshige. He gave up his role in the fire department to focus entirely on painting and print design. He studied painting, intrigued by the Shijo school. Hiroshige’s artistic genius wasn’t recognized until 1832 when he became a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition, creating 8000 prints in saturated color. His series of woodblock prints of the Tokaido road connecting Edo to Kyoto was his breakthrough series known as The 53 Stations of the Tokaido (1832-1833).
