John Lennon Art

British, 1940-1980

John Lennon was a contemporary musician, songwriter, poet, philosopher and artist whose message across all professions was peace and harmony.

Long before he was a celebrated musician with the Beatles, Lennon was studying his first love at the esteemed Liverpool Art Institute. He focused on line drawing, using sumi ink or a pen to create beautiful line illustrations.

Lennon illustrated his three best-selling books that were published in the 1960s. Today his whimsical expressions of humanity are enjoyed by many critics and collectors alike as they are on display in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Art was another way for Lennon to express the wit, wisdom and whimsy that made him one of the most important cultural figures of our time. As he once said, "If art were to redeem man, it could do so only by saving him from the seriousness of life and restoring him to an unexpected boyishness."

Provenance Estate of Aviva and Jacob Bal-Teshuva ABOUT THE PONT NEUF WRAPPED PROJECT: On September 22, 1985, a group of 300 professional workers completed the temporary work of art The Pont Neuf Wrapped. They had deployed 450,000 square feet (41,800 square meters) of woven polyamide fabric, silky in appearance and golden sandstone in color, covering: The sides and vaults of the twelve arches, without hindering river traffic. The parapets down to the ground. The sidewalks and curbs (pedestrians walked on the fabric). All the street lamps on both sides of the bridge. The vertical part of the embankment of the western tip of the Île de la Cité. The Esplanade of the Vert-Galant. What Yoko Ono's art is called varies, as she has worked in several types of media. During the 1960s, Ono largely produced performance art. During that period, she was part of the Fluxus art movement, whose proponents sought to challenge the traditional definition of art and expand it to include concerts, performances, scores and happenings. In addition, she has created conceptual art, in which artists are less focused on a medium being something traditionally “artistic” and instead engage in using any object, movement, form, action or place to express an idea. Some of Ono's most famous works include Painting to Be Stepped On, Grapefruit, Ceiling Painting/Yes Painting, My Mommy Is Beautiful, Painting to Hammer a Nail and Play it by Trust. On 1stDibs, shop a range of photography and objects featuring Yoko Ono.
