Questions About More Abstract Expressionism
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Abstract expressionism art is focused on emotional expression which emphasizes the creative and spontaneous act. This art originated in New York in the ‘40's and ‘50's.
    Glenn Green Galleries
    Glenn Green GalleriesFebruary 24, 2021
Abstract Expressionism is a non traditional movement of art employing differing styles and techniques. Mostly non-representational in form and media, created with emotion, action and creative means including sculpture, painting and printmaking.
    Irena Orlov ArtFebruary 25, 2021
From the stains of Jackson Pollock, the deformed bodies of Willem de Kooning, the red paint of Philip Guston to the chaotic patterns of Mark Tobey, these works have changed the course of American painting. These artists were part of Abstract Expressionism, developed after World War II and the Holocaust, and were the first American avant-garde. The terrible events of the war were followed by a period of uncertainty and questioning of human morality. Consequently, many artists began to create heartbreaking works without external references. They stopped being inspired by reality as it was discouraging and took refuge within themselves, their emotions, approaching abstract language. However, it was not a collective and that is why there are so many styles and very personal works. This resulted in the proliferation of works of art that included torn forms of creation in which aesthetic enjoyment, as it was understood until then, was left aside. These artists were united by disenchantment with reality, loneliness, and anguish. The main characteristic of the pictorial movement was the spontaneous affirmation of the individual through painting. It is a non-figurative art that does not conform to the limits of conventional representation. In turn, the expressionists valued the process of creation more than the finished work. The new techniques privileged the fact of transmitting emotions, an attitude, or even the artist's personality through the way the paint is applied: the abruptness or the freedom of the strokes, or the violence or the "desperation" of throwing the paint on the canvas. Abstract expressionism is communication without words. Abstract Expressionism set a precedent in the history of art. While artists were persecuted and exiled from Europe, New York was transformed into the city of freedom and experimentation. Paris displaced as the cradle of art, Abstract Expressionism witnessed a new era.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
The difference between Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism is mainly how the artist approaches the depiction of subjects produced in the two styles. Minimalist artists focus on representing subjects as simple geometric shapes and strive to eliminate emotions from their work. In contrast, Abstract Expressionists seek to convey the inner thoughts and feelings of themselves and their subjects through their art. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of Minimalist and Abstract Expressionist art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Edvard Munch is known as the father of expressionism.

  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2024
Opinions vary as to which artist is the father of Expressionism. Some historians give the title to Vincent van Gogh because his Post-Impressionist style influenced many of the Expressionists. Other experts credit Wassily Kandinsky as the father of Expressionism as his painting Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) was the source of the name of a group of artists that instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. Some other important figures in the Expressionist movement include Franz Marc, Paul Klee, August Macke, Edvard Munch Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Find a selection of Expressionist art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Expressionism is characterized by distorted, exaggerated forms and vivid colors that convey emotions.

  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Impressionist art captures the effect of light on a scene while expressionist works convey emotions through distortion, exaggeration and bold colors.

  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2024
The difference between Symbolism and Expressionism comes down to the primary goals of the artists who worked in the movements. Symbolist artists sought to convey meaning by incorporating symbols into their works. They often drew inspiration from literary themes, myths and legends when selecting symbols. Instead of striving to convey symbolic meanings, Expressionists aimed to capture the emotional experiences of themselves and their subjects through color, line and other artistic elements. On 1stDibs, explore a wide variety of Symbolist and Expressionist art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 20, 2024
Paul Klee is the Swiss painter who was known for combining Surrealism with Expressionism. His works reflect an emotional lyricism, and he was unafraid to approach his art from a perspective of childlike innocence. Klee's paintings frequently allude to poetry, music and dreams and sometimes even include words, symbols and musical notation. Some of his most famous pieces include Castle and Sun, Senecio, Cat and Bird, Fish Magic and Angelus Novus. Explore a range of Paul Klee art on 1stDibs.

Abstract shapes are the large, basic shapes that provide the building blocks for virtually any painting in any style. Abstract shapes are created by abstracting the most basic and recognizable aspects of a real-life shape and creating a simplified representation of it. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of abstract paintings and other kinds of abstract art.
  • Lilac Gallery Ltd.March 18, 2021
The 'Abstract style' term refers to the category of the Movement of the piece. As abstraction indicates a departure from reality in the depiction of imagery in art, the artist creates a painting where the subject, shape, form, color, and line, is created with no particular references of the world but as a composition that may exist with a degree of independence from its vision.

An abstract collage is a type of artwork that combines a mix of materials assembled together to create an image that does not depict everyday objects, places or things. Instead, the collages convey symbolic messages or evoke emotions through visual elements like color, shape and texture. You'll find a large collection of collage art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

No, abstract art, by definition, is not representational. Although the shapes in an abstract composition may be based on real world objects, these objects are not recognizable in the finished work.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
To describe abstract art, focus on its elements. Take notice of the types of lines and shapes the work features. Discuss its color and value, the term for the interplay between light and dark in a piece. You can also consider its texture, the materials used to produce it and how it fits into the space that surrounds it. Find a wide range of abstract art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Abstract art grew out of the desire by artists in the early 20th century, like Wassily Kandinsky, to create “pure art,” grounded not in visual reality but in the artist’s imagination.

  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Abstract art was influenced by Postimpressionism.
