However he was seduced by the charms of Italy and spent much time there capturing the magic of the architecture and everyday life especially in Venice. It is for these views of Venice that he has become so well known. A contemporary of Felix Ziem, like him he paints with great wit and skill. He was especially known for his talents as a colourist.
