Anna Schuster Draft Design (Geometric Abstract, Shapes, Dark, Pastel) Gouache on Paper Year: 1992 Signed by hand, dated and inscribed Unique Size: 22.6 × 23.4 on 23.8 × 33.5 inches (57.4 × 59.4 cm on 60.5 × 85.1 cm) COA provided Anna Schuster is a German contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, installation, photography, video, and new media. She studied from 1981–1983 at the Freie Kunstschule Stuttgart and from 1983–1989 at the Universität der Künste (UdK) Berlin, where she later also held several academic positions including guest professorship and teaching assignments. Schuster’s work is characterized by process-oriented exploration in which layering, fragmentation, and found elements reveal the evolution of the artistic act itself. Rather than presenting a fixed final image, her works emphasize transformation and temporality, allowing each stage of the process to remain visible and to trigger the next. In her video installations particularly, the dimension of time—through movement, stillness, and spatial perception—plays a central role. As Schuster has noted, “Every fixation simultaneously provokes its reversal and dissolution,” a concept that reflects her interest in instability, perception, and the poetic tension between structure and change. Her works have been exhibited widely in Germany and internationally and are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, the Berlinische Galerie, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, and the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl. She lives and works in Berlin. Abstract Work on Paper Mid-Century Modernism Greek American Gouache Drawing. A modernist artist who emigrated to America from Greece in 1904, when he was fourteen years old, Jean Xceron is described as having a reputation as an artist that has mysteriously fallen into obscurity---especially since he was reportedly quite prominent during his lifetime. However, a partial explanation of that omission is the fact that many of his papers and early records have been lost. He was a painter of biomorphic abstractions and did collages, which were influenced by Dadaism. Xceron was active in New York City when modernism was gaining influence. Of him during this period, it was written that his artistic role was "a vital link between what is commonly termed as the first-generation (the Stieglitz group, the Synchromists, etc.) and second-generation, the American Abstract Artists, the Transcendental Painting...

Opper Estate Maroon Abstract c. 1940-1950's Gouache on Paper 15" x 18" Unframed From the estate of Ruth Friedmann Opper & Jerry Opper. Ruth was the daughter of Bauhaus artist, Gustav Friedmann. San Francisco Abstract Expression A free-spirited wave of creative energy swept through the San Francisco art community after World War II. Challenging accepted modes of painting, Abstract Expressionists produced highly experimental works that jolted the public out of its postwar complacency. Abstract Expressionism resulted from a broad collective impulse rather than the inspiration of a small band of New York artists. Documenting the interchanges between the East and West Coasts, she cites areas of mutual influence and shows the impact of San Francisco on the New York School, including artists such as Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt. San Francisco's Beat poets...
